YouTube TV won’t be available on Roku devices and Roku TVs until sometime next year according to a new report. The highly anticipated streaming TV service from Google’s popular YouTube arm has been making the rounds to new markets through Android smartphones and Android TV devices since earlier this year following its official launch, and although YouTube had already noted that more connected device types would be getting the new service it didn’t explicitly state when those things would actually be launching.
The news about a 2018 launch may be a disappointment to Roku device owners who were wanting to give this particular streaming TV service a chance, but it won’t be too long of a wait as the launch for Roku is slated to hit within the first quarter of next year so it should be available on Roku devices and TVs with Roku built-in before the end of March. That said, Q1 is simply the estimated time frame and it could always be delayed further than Q1, so interested consumers who use Roku instead of any of the currently available supported devices will simply have to be patient.
Although it’s been acknowledged that the rollout to Roku and other connected devices is taking longer than what YouTube may have been hoping for, there are no reasons as to why the launch is taking longer. Samsung and Sony smart TV owners are also waiting on their own version of a YouTube TV app as it’s currently being worked on as one of the additional connected devices alongside Roku. There was no mention of whether or not this would also be coming in the first quarter of the year, but chances are it may be planned for a launch around the same time or it could be in for a bit longer of a wait. YouTube TV, which costs subscribers about $39.99 a month, was recently opened up to consumers in 34 new markets around the U.S., allowing more users to give it a shot and see if it’s worth letting go of a traditional cable TV plan or another streaming TV service as there are other options. Earlier last month, YouTube TV also gained Picture-in-Picture mode for users running on Android 8.0 Oreo and above.
