Samsung’s 2018 iteration of its Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8 Plus handsets may have only just been announced but the stock firmware for both devices have, surprisingly enough, already been spotted online. The devices are, of course, official now, so there isn’t a lot of information that can be taken from the firmware that isn’t already fairly well known for those who have been following along. The software in the firmware does appear to be Android version 7.1.1. However, while Samsung has not yet outlined precisely where the new mid-range smartphones would be available when they begin shipping in January, the firmware seems to at least provide some clues. Namely, the firmware seems to indicate that the Galaxy A8 will sell in several European countries, as well as some in the Asian region. On the other hand, the Galaxy A8 Plus looks as though it will primarily only be available for buys in a much smaller number of select countries. Listing each of the countries here would take a substantial amount of space, but both devices appear to be following the availability trends of their predecessors.
Although the firmware that has been released does appear to highlight, at very least, the initial availability for the 2018 edition of Samsung’s Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8 Plus, it is important to bear in mind that list could change. While it isn’t likely that any countries for which firmware has already been released will be removed from the list of countries where the devices will be available, there isn’t really anything preventing the said list from growing. That’s because, given that neither device is expected to sell until next month, the firmware released so far is not necessarily all of the firmware planned. Samsung could add more countries and regions. Having said that, there are no guarantees in either point until Samsung unveils exactly which regions can expect to see the devices.
As to the devices themselves, there are only a few differences between them. While the larger Galaxy A8 Plus is rated as bearing a 6-inch FullHD+ (2220 x 1080) Super AMOLED Infinity display, the Galaxy A8 is scaled back at 5.6-inches. Both devices are encased in a combination of metal and glass, as well as having a fingerprint sensor located at the back and underneath the camera. The primary shooter is set at 16-megapixels with a f/1.7 aperture with an LED flash, while the front of each features a dual camera setup – a 16-megapixel sensor coupled with an 8-megapixel sensor, with the aperture of both rated at f/1.7. The devices are rated at IP68 for dust and water resistance. Both are driven by one of Samsung’s 64-bit, octa-core Exynos 7885 chipsets built on a 14-nanometer process. The new Galaxy A8 comes with 4GB of RAM and a choice of either 32GB or 64GB of storage. The new Galaxy A8 Plus ships with a combination of 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The former device is powered by a 3,000mAh non-removable battery with adaptive charging, while the latter is powered by the same, but rated at 3,500mAh.
