For years, the big topic in the world of technology has been about 5G, which is going to be the next evolution of the mobile network. And now it appears that we are edging close to 5G becoming a reality. Today, 3GPP in Lisbon, Portugal, completed the first 5G standards. Now, obviously, there is still quite a ways to go with 5G before we see it as a feature in most smartphones available at our local carriers, but today was a big step for the industry.
This completion of the first 5G standard, 5G NR, has introduced an intermediate milestone, according to Qualcomm. And that is a milestone towards completing technical specifications for a non-standalone 5G NR rollout. And this means that large-scale trials and deployments should start in 2019. There are two different 5G NR standards out there, Non-Standalone and Standalone. A Non-Standalone 5G NR will use the existing LTE radio and core network as an anchor for mobility management. This is what carriers will be targeting for with early 2019 deployments. While a Standalone 5G NR is full user and control plane capability for 5G NR. This would utilize the 5G next-generation core network architecture. These are expected to be completed in June of 2018.
Qualcomm has worked with other partners and the 3GPP to ensure commonality between these two frameworks, for 5G. And that was also completed as part of the intermediate goal that was accomplished this week in Lisbon. The first 5G NR standard introduces many advanced wireless technologies, which will be meeting the 5G requirements and allow for enhanced mobile broadband. Qualcomm has been working to develop the building blocks for 5G air interface for plenty of years now. Some of the essential 5G NR technology components here include the scalable 5G NR scalable OFDM numerology, 5G NR advanced channel coding, the low-latency 5G NR self-contained slot structure, and support for 5G NR Massive MIMO and mobile mmWave.
What this means for consumers and the phones in their hands right now is, not a whole lot. This is more for the carriers and their partners. But 5G is coming, and Qualcomm has been a driving force behind the next evolution of the mobile network for quite a few years now and even debuted its first 5G modem for a smartphone earlier this year, which is being tested in a reference design device as we speak. This is important for Qualcomm, since it does have a hand in basically all areas of the smartphone. Not only the processor, but the modem and other components inside. And pushing the boundary for these standards is important for them to stay on top and keep pushing the tech industry as a whole.
