You don’t have to be a veteran of trench warfare to know your feet are happiest when they’re dry, do you? Especially if it’s not particularly warm, and especially if you’re zipping along ginning up a nice wind-chill factor at the same time. Now that Gore-tex and copycat breathable waterproof membranes are here, the days of plastic bags over your feet are over. Though that’s still an option.
Alpinestars Campeche Drystar – $250-260
Alpinestars alone makes a veritable plethoria (sic) of alleged rainproof boots, “Drystar” being its own version of Gore-tex (“Campeche” being a Mexican state on the Yucatan peninsula adjacent to the Mexican Alps). We can’t vouch for all of them, but my dogs have stayed dry through a couple of reasonable deluges in my Campeches. Features include thick, oiled leather construction, easy entry via zipper and Velcro for a snug fit (avoid these if you don’t really enjoy lots of Velcro), reinforced toe box and heel counters, polypropylene insole with steel shank, and soft, grippy, replaceable anatomical EVA footbeds that make these quite comfy but also quite warm. SIDI Canyon Gore-Tex – $350
These I’ve been wearing, the same pair even, for well over a decade and they’re still going strong. I think I got them before I knew what Gore-Tex was, and was amazed a few times how well they kept my feet dry through some pretty damp days. (That’s them in our lead image from five years ago.) These are made of “full grain microfiber,” seal up snug via (also too much) Velcro and a (replaceable) buckle. There’s a removable arch support, ankle and toe protection, padded shin plates, double stitching all over the place, and a bonded non-slip lug sole. Quite comfy and way durable.
TCX Fuel Waterproof – $290
TCX typically make pretty nice boots. These contain its “T-Dry” waterproof membrane inside a vintagey-looking full grain leather upper, replete with the company’s CFS Comfort Fit System, toe and heel counters, malleolus inserts to protect those inner ankles, adjustable real-steel buckles and deep-tread soles for kicking asphalt and superior grip on terrain and footpegs. All while maintaining that classic look. Brown is nice.
Tourmaster Solution WP Air – $130
These are more for hot weather climes (hence the “Air” in the name) that receive lots of precipitation. Designed to let your feet outgas during the heat of the day, the HiPora membrane is also there to keep that cold rain out when the heavens open up. These are made of water-repellent leather, leather stretch panels and Velcro for a customizable fit, molded nylon shin and ankle guards, thermoplastic heel cups and toe caps, atop an orthopedic vibration-absorbing foot bed and single-density compound soles for good grip wet or dry.

Stylmartin Wave Boots – $255
Another fashion-forward footwear offering straight out of the Italian boot, these are described as a wingtip for the military-spec Humvee crowd. Waxed on the outside as a first layer of defense against water, there’s also a waterproof membrane inside the mildly distressed full-grain leather upper. Equipped with ankle protective ankle inserts and an anti-slip oil-proof sole.

Klim Outlander GTX – $280
These look more like something you’d put on your Sherpa, but we’ve been impressed with just about everything Klim makes, and they’re getting lots of good reviews. Half motorcycle boot and half hiking boot, with a Gore-Tex lining, these sport D30 protection in the ankles and tongue, reinforced toes and heels and reinforced rubber in high wear areas. Nestfit technology with a quick BOA lacing system with open lace guides make the Outlanders a snap to get in and out of quickly, while a full-length lasting board provides support when you’re standing on the pegs.

Dainese R Fulcrum C2 Gore-Tex – $300
Dainese makes-a very nice-a stuff, and these cowhide supple full-grain leather uppers are backed up by a genuine Gore-Tex waterproof membrane, as well as CE-certified inserts for both weather and crash protection. Like most of these boots, there are reflective inserts. Elasticated inserts provide a secure fit, a thermoformed insert protects the shin, and the differentiated design rubber soles provide secure footing in the wet.

Forma Terra EVO Low – $290
When you find yourself riding more on fire roads than freeways, says Forma, you might be ready for these Terra EVO Lows. Oiled full-grain leather uppers are jam-packed with moto levels of protection, including an optional steel toe cap, but comfortable thanks to a Soft polymer padding with memory foam. Also, you’ll find a Drtytex membrane inside to keep rain out and let sweat evaporate; the replaceable footbed is even equipped with A.P.S. (Air Pump System) – not sure how that works? Also, the welt sole is stitched on, making it easily replaceable.
