GearBest user logins may have potentially leaked online according to users on Reddit, who are claiming that information for the website has been posted up to an online repository called pastebin, containing details such as the username and password, and purchase details for the orders that were placed. Based on images shared through Reddit on popular image sharing website imgur, an exchange with one customer and GearBest’s customer support team shows that the online wholesaler has been notified of the security issue and that it has passed the problem onto its IT team to investigate and hopefully figure out where the leak may have stemmed from.
We have reached out to GearBest to inquire about the possibility of something being done to ensure that user information is being taken care of, and according to the response we received the situation is being handled and they are investigating to see what the cause was or where the leak came from. According to some of the speculation the issue is coming from a GearBest application that was hacked to gain the personal information of users, though at this time no details regarding the cause or where the leak came from have been shared. That said, once GearBest has shared any details regarding the security issue we will update this post to let users know what happened.
While instances like this one with GearBest are certainly unfortunate, it’s important to remember that things like this aren’t as uncommon as they used to be. This day and age personal information and online data are more at risk than they have been even just five or six years ago, so it doesn’t hurt to be advantageous in situations like this one by changing passwords for accounts, including changing the password for GearBest and potentially any account that could be tied to it through the use of the same email you may use for other accounts.
