HMD Global Working On SD845-Powered Nokia Flagship: Rumor

According to a new report by Roland Quandt, a well-known tipster, HMD Global is actually working on a new Nokia-branded flagship. Mr. Quandt says that the company is working on a phone with a ‘current high-end SoC’, which suggests we’re looking at the Snapdragon 845, while he also mentions that the phone will have ‘a feature that was pioneered by a few Chinese brands’. Mr. Quandt also added that he’ll share more info about all this soon, quite probably later today or tomorrow.

Now, we don’t know what exactly does Mr. Quandt means by ‘a feature pioneered by a few Chinese brands’, but let’s assume he’s talking about a pop-up camera module. The Vivo NEX features a pop-up front-facing camera, while the OPPO Find X comes with a pop-up camera module in general, all of its cameras are included in there, both its front and rear-facing ones. In any case, Vivo’s and OPPO’s implementation of such technology is considerably different, as the Vivo NEX has a system which raises a small module containing a front-facing camera, the OPPO Find X’s whole top pops up when its cameras are getting ready to shoot. It remains to be seen how will HMD Global utilize such technology, presuming that’s what Mr. Quandt is talking about of course. Alternatively, he could be talking about an in-display fingerprint scanner, as that’s also something that Chinese OEMs started including in their devices, so it’s one or the other.

If HMD Global is planning to incorporate a pop-up camera module in its upcoming flagship, that probably means that the company will be able to trim down those bezels even further. The Nokia 9 has been rumored for a long time at this point, but it still did not launch, HMD Global introduced the Nokia 8 Sirocco instead earlier this year. We are still not sure what the upcoming Nokia-branded flagship will be called, but it’s possible that it will be called the Nokia 9 or 10, but we’ll see. The Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco are the company’s current flagships, and they’re both fueled by the Snapdragon 835 SoC.
