TSMC To Manufacture Kirin 980 SoC Using 7nm Process: Report

According to a new report that just surfaced, Huawei’s upcoming Kirin 980 flagship SoC will be made using TSMC’s 7nm FinFet process. As most of you know by now, the Kirin 970 is Huawei’s current-gen flagship, and it fuels a number of the company’s high-end devices, including the Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, P20, P20 Pro, and so on. The Kirin 970 is a 10nm 64-bit octa-core processor, and it’s one of the most powerful mobile SoCs out there at the moment, well, it seems like Huawei plans to kick it up a notch with its successor.

TSMC will be manufacturing the Kirin 980 it seems, despite the fact some rumors claimed that Samsung will take over. Ina any case, this new report claims that TSMC is ready to start manufacturing 7nm chips using its FinFet manufacturing process, the Kirin 980 may as well be the first such processor to see the light of day, as that chip is expected to become official later this year, and it will probably fuel Huawei’s new Mate-branded flagship(s) which will probably arrive in Q4 this year. The Kirin 980 will ship with Cambricon’s new 1M AI chip that was designed using TSMC’s 7nm processor. The Kirin 970 includes a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit), and if reports are to be believed, the Kirin 980 will as well, though its NPU will be on a higher level than Kirin 970’s, which was to be expected.

Huawei has been releasing flagship devices which are fueled by its flagship Kirin chips for quite some time now, and Kirin chips have been becoming better year after year. The Kirin 970 is a true beast as far as performance goes, and depending on what you’re looking for, it even outperforms the Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810 in some categories. Those three chips are definitely the most powerful mobile processors out there at the moment, and even though MediaTek has its own SoC in the game, it’s still not on the same level as the three aforementioned chips, though it’s also noticeably cheaper, so there’s that. More Kirin 980-related info is expected to surface in the coming weeks / months, so stay tuned for that.
