Samsung has joined the Linux Foundation Networking Fund as a Platinum Member, which means the South Korean conglomerate will collaborate with the open source community to increase the availability of solutions for the next-generation networks. For the uninitiated, the Linux Foundation Networking Fund aims to streamline the management of open source projects by various members. In joining the LNF, Samsung also hopes to facilitate innovation for future networks including 5G.
In a press release announcing its participation in the LNF, Samsung noted that open source is capable of addressing the demand for a network platform that offers various solutions based on 5G and the Internet of Things. That is because open source systems can help eliminate the challenges associated with old hardware-centric network tools. Samsung added that it has also been growing its stake in open source systems by joining various open source communities including the Open Platform for NFV, Open Network Automation Platform, Open Network Operating System, and OpenStack. Ultimately, the company’s goal is to develop virtualization systems that will eventually be ready for commercial applications as part of Samsung’s efforts to build automated network management platforms powered by artificial intelligence. Speaking of which, Linux Foundation previously announced an open source project in October called the Acumos Project, the goal of which is to develop an integrated framework that will facilitate the sharing of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. As part of that goal, Linux Foundation teamed up with AT&T and Tech Mahindra to build AI apps and models that are accessible to other developers who wish to replicate those models. That project is also set for unveiling early this year, though the exact date has yet to be confirmed.
Prior to Samsung’s announcement, Verizon also recently made a commitment to contribute to open platforms and open source by joining the Linux Foundation’s Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) project. The goal of that move is to help drive innovation in software-defined networks and network function virtualization. The ONAP project is meant to convene carriers and vendors from across the world in order to change the service delivery lifecycle for network, cable, and cloud providers.
