MediaTek’s upcoming Helio P70 chipset was seemingly benchmarked in AnTuTu recently, where it seems to have scored a total of 156,906 points, placing it above the company’s own Helio X30 high-end SoC released in early 2017, as well as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660. The information was recently leaked by an industry insider on China’s social network Weibo in the form of a screenshot which further details each benchmark category including CPU, GPU, UX, and memory. According to previous reports, MediaTek is expected to put its X series on hold for at least the first half of 2018 and focus more on the P series this year, and while the Helio P70 might not actually fit in the high-end market, judging by this score reportedly registered in AnTuTu it should at least be able to compete with any mid-range chipset currently on the market.
According to the screenshot, the MediaTek Helio P70 managed to yield 73,969 points in the CPU category, 30,737 points in the graphics department, an odd 11,111 points in memory, and a little over 41,000 points in UX. Compared to the company’s last high-end chipset – the Helio X30- which scores around 141,000 points, the P70 appears to handle the CPU and memory benchmarks with more ease, whereas the X30 performs better in the GPU and UX department. Having said that, the P70’s relatively high level of performance may have been the reason why the chipset was being referred to as an upcoming high-end solution for the mobile market, despite the fact that the “P” series is reserved for mid-range chipsets. Assuming that the information is accurate, the Helio P70 would be able to outscore the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 by around 50,000 points, and Samsung’s Exynos 7872 by roughly 70,000 points. But as always, it’s important to remember that benchmark results are meant to show a chipset’s capabilities in a synthetic environment and real-life usage scenarios might yield different results.
MediaTek is expected to unveil the Helio P70 in about a month from the time of this writing, during MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. The P70 is also said to be accompanied by a less powerful alternative known as the Helio P40, which would presumably cover the lower end of the spectrum. Both chipsets are rumored to be manufactured using TSMC’s 12nm process – thought last year it was reported that the company might switch to GlobalFoundries in 2018 – and both should employ AI technologies. The Helio P70 specifically is expected to house four ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores along with an additional four high-performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores, and a Mali-G71 MP3 graphics chip.
