Xperia XA1 Line Now Getting Dec. 2017 Android Security Patch

Three handsets from Japanese smartphone manufacturer Sony are currently receiving a software package that will install the December 2017 Android security patch: the Sony Xperia XA1, Xperia XA1 Ultra, and the Xperia XA1 Plus. The December 2017 Android security patch includes fixes for several vulnerabilities found in the media framework of the operating system, some of which are categorized either as an unauthorized elevation of privileges or denial of service vulnerabilities. The update also resolves a number of security exploits found in the kernel components of the operating system.

The software package is now rolling out automatically, although it may take several days before all devices receive the update. Users can proceed to the system Settings app in order to manually trigger the installation process if they can, and another option is for people to use their personal computers to upgrade their handsets. Before downloading the software package, the user should first verify there is enough free space in the phone’s internal flash storage to temporarily keep the installation file which has a size of roughly 403MB. Moreover, the files stored in the handset should be backed up to a personal computer or a microSD card and the user should also check if the smartphone has sufficient battery life remaining to last the entire procedure. After the update is installed, users may identify the new software builds by the firmware version numbers 40.0.A.6.175 for the Xperia XA1, 40.0.A.6.175 for the Xperia XA1 Ultra, and 48.0.A.1.117 for the Xperia XA1 Plus.

The Sony Xperia XA1 and the Xperia XA1 Ultra were launched back in February, while the Xperia XA1 Plus was unveiled this August. All of the devices are powered by the same chipset, the Helio P20 SoC from MediaTek. This SoC is comprised of an octa-core ARM Cortex A53 64-bit CPU clocked at up to 2.3GHz and the Mali-T880 MP2 GPU. The Xperia XA1 contains 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal flash storage while both the Xperia XA1 Ultra and the Xperia XA1 Plus include 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. The flash storage of all the three devices can be expanded using a microSD card. Screen size is the main differentiating factor between the trio as the Xperia XA1 sports a 5-inch display, the Xperia XA1 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen and the Xperia XA1 Ultra is equipped with a 6-inch module.
