An unspecified smartphone bearing Samsung’s logo leaked online earlier today, having originally emerged on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The image that can be seen above shows the back side of the device that appears to have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, suggesting its front is of the bezel-less variety and lacks a physical Home button. Coupled with the existence of a single-lens camera setup, the newly uncovered handset may be the Galaxy A8 or Galaxy A8 Plus, though neither of the two Android mid-rangers were expected to come equipped with a heart rate monitor that the leaked product appears to feature.
As some previous reports suggested that the upcoming Galaxy S9 lineup may not fully embrace a dual-camera setup and leave the smaller Galaxy S9 without such an imaging system, the device seen above may also be the upcoming 5.8-inch flagship, albeit that seems like a less probable scenario given the somewhat crude design of a number of its back panel’s elements, including a half-arched camera module and a seemingly square fingerprint reader. The device itself appears to feature a Midnight Black finish which is generally associated with Samsung’s high-end offerings but was also rumored to be trickling down to the Galaxy A (2018) series. Regardless, this particular model is believed to be a prototype device and not one that’s meant for commercialization, though a similar device may eventually enter mass production.
The positioning of the fingerprint scanner that’s indicative of a bezel-free aesthetic excludes the possibility of the leaked handset being an upcoming member of the Galaxy J lineup which isn’t expected to receive a visual overhaul next year. The final possibility is that the source shared a prototype of an upcoming Galaxy C-series device, with this particular line also being expected to transition to an 18.5:9 aspect ratio next year. Samsung‘s 2018 mobile offerings are expected to span more product categories than ever as the company is reportedly preparing to introduce the foldable Galaxy X at some point next year and launch it as its third flagship series meant to be sold simultaneously with the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups.
