Samsung’s Secure Wi-Fi service introduced to select Galaxy Note 8 units earlier this month through a software update will now be supported by McAfee, the cybersecurity company announced earlier this week. Moving forward, McAfee will be responsible for the backend of Samsung’s VPN service, providing enhanced security to Galaxy Note 8 owners in the United States and will also start doing the same in Europe in the coming weeks.
As of this writing, Secure Wi-Fi is available on models of the stylus-enabled flagship distributed by T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular. Later this year the service, will also go live in certain European countries including the UK, Germany, and France, and will continue to expand gradually in additional countries, though availability may vary even in supported markets, depending on the carriers. Secure Wi-Fi is a VPN service provided by Samsung on the Galaxy Note 8 in the wake of the KRACK Wi-Fi vulnerability, though the application was initially released along with the company’s budget series of Galaxy J smartphones. Samsung’s solution offers users 250MB of secure VPN data for free every month, though users who may require more than the allocated 250MB can also choose to subscribe for a monthly fee of €1,99 which will give them unlimited data, or pay €0,99 for 24 hours of VPN access.
Secure Wi-Fi is primarily designed for usage in situations where smartphones need to connect to unprotected networks such as public hotspot locations that can technically leave them open to malicious attacks. According to a recent survey conducted by McAfee, 58 percent of participants claim to know how to determine whether a Wi-Fi connection is secure, though only 49 percent actually go through with the process. Meanwhile, 20 percent don’t take into account the security of their Wi-Fi connection, and 32 percent of survey participants claim that whether or not they will connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi network is determined by how much they need to access the Internet at any given time. As smartphones now established itself as truly ubiquitous devices, Samsung’s collaboration with McAfee aims to give Galaxy Note 8 owners a boost of confidence and security, especially for tapping into unsecured public hotspots.
