Samsung Galaxy S9 To Lack A Dual-Camera Setup, Renders Suggest

The Samsung Galaxy S9 will lack a dual-camera setup, according to a new set of high-resolution renders obtained by known industry insider Steve Hemmerstoffer, better known by his handle OnLeaks. The dozen images that can be seen in the gallery below are said to be based on the latest information about the Galaxy S9 provided by sources familiar with the final design of Samsung’s upcoming Android flagship and depict a handset that’s largely similar to the company’s Galaxy S8 series.

The renders correspond with recent reports suggesting only the Galaxy S9 Plus will feature a dual-camera setup, whereas its smaller counterpart is said to ship with a single-lens imaging system. The leaked device also appears to have a minimal camera bump, whereas its dual-LED (dual-tone) flash unit and heart rate monitor are positioned to the right of the camera, hence being more similar to the back plate of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge than the Galaxy S8 lineup which featured the two components on the opposite side. The fingerprint reader of the handset is shown as having mostly retained its overall shape introduced with the Galaxy S8 but is now positioned horizontally below the camera instead of being placed vertically to its right. The redesign should make the sensor easier to reach and address one of the rare complaints some consumers had about Samsung’s last flagship duo.

The same source claims the Galaxy S9 will sport a 5.65-inch display panel or a screen around that size, though virtually every previous report indicated the screen sizes of Samsung’s next premium smartphones will remain the same compared to the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 and 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 Plus. The insider did agree with previous rumors about the dimensions of the device which is said to be 147.6 x 68.7 x 8.4mm in size, while also reiterating that the bezels of the Galaxy S9 lineup won’t be significantly smaller than they were this year, with the top one supposedly staying the same and the bottom one being only 1mm thinner. Samsung’s pair of Android flagships is expected to be announced around MWC 2018 and start retailing by early spring.
