Xiaomi’s upcoming Redmi 5 budget smartphone has been leaked in a pearly white variant on Chinese microblogging service Sina Weibo. The image above shows a device with an 18:9 screen that’s unsurprisingly reminiscent of the Redmi Note 5, but smaller and with a few small design changes. For starters, the smaller variant of the phone has noticeably larger bezels. While the bezels are as chunky as those of the average smartphone, the Redmi Note 5 maintains the svelte form factor ushered into popularity by many phone makers over the course of this year. The front-facing camera, light, and sensor array has also been changed, with the addition of what appear to be dual front cameras. A set of volume buttons can be seen on the phone’s right side, but the blurry photo makes it unclear where the power button is; a third button seems to poke out from behind the photographer’s thumb, and it roughly coincides with the location of the power button on the Redmi Note 5.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5, unlike its larger cousin, has not been spotted on TENAA or otherwise outed in any official capacity. Thus far, leaks and rumors peg its spec sheet as centering around a fairly powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset, paired up with 3GB of RAM. The internal storage is reportedly going to be set at 32GB which should help with storing large and depth-injected photos generated by the dual rear cameras of the Android-powered device. If the phone does have dual cameras on the back, then the extra sensor over the Redmi Note 5 seen on the front of the phone in this leak may also be an additional front camera. The price of the device is estimated to be around 1,599 yuan, or $241.
Xiaomi’s Redmi lineup isn’t an entry-level product family but is aimed at giving mid-range buyers more bang for their buck. The series has enjoyed respectable hardware and fairly low prices since its inception. This phone’s predecessor, the Redmi 4, was a thin, well-built device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 under its 720p screen. It later got a small spec bump in the form of the Redmi 4X, and a leap forward in the form of the Redmi 4 Prime. The Redmi 5’s rumored specs place it on the higher end of the Redmi range, making it more of a successor to the Redmi 4 Prime than the vanilla Redmi 4.
