The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is now getting an update that will install the October 2017 Android security patch to the handset. The security update fixes several critical vulnerabilities found in the media framework of the Android operating system, in addition to eliminating a remote code execution vulnerability which allowed hackers to access and control the smartphone without having physical access to it. The software upgrade also fixes six security issues found in the proprietary software suite of the South Korean smartphone manufacturer. Right now, the installation package is rolling out to handsets with the model number SM-G925F in the United Kingdom, although the manufacturer should soon distribute the update to other markets as well.
The South Korean manufacturer is currently distributing the software upgrade over the air, and users of the Galaxy S6 Edge only need to wait for an update notification from the company. Another option is to go to the device’s Settings app and initiate the update process manually if the package is already available for download. Before the installation of the software upgrade begins, it is advisable to back up the contents of the smartphone to a personal computer or a microSD card and fully charge the battery of the device in order to avoid any dangerous interruptions. It is also important to verify that the device has a sufficient amount of free storage space to temporarily keep the installation file. After the update is installed, the new software build can be identified by the firmware version number G925FXXU5EQI8.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was launched alongside the Galaxy S6 back in March 2015. One of the defining hardware features of the Galaxy S6 Edge is its 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,440 pixels and curved long edges. The device is powered by the Exynos 7420 chipset which is comprised of an octa-core 64-bit CPU and the Mali T760MP8 GPU. The SoC is fabricated using Samsung’s 14nm process node technology, with the handset itself also featuring 3GB of RAM and being available in variants containing 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB of internal flash memory. The rear camera of the Galaxy S6 Edge is equipped with a 16-megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization support, while the front-facing module comes with a 5-megapixel sensor.
