Sony is reportedly beginning to roll out a fix for some camera issues commonly found in its Xperia XZs, XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact handsets. If that’s not enough to get excited over, the new fix also appears to be primarily rolling out as part of the company’s efforts to update its smartphones to Android 8.0 (Oreo). That means users of the above-listed devices now also have, in some cases, a more accurate timeline for when that major update to the Android OS itself will arrive. As already mentioned, the update is already rolling out to Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium, as of this writing. However, the fix should begin to roll out as early as by the end of November for the Xperia XZ1 models. Meanwhile, the update for the company’s Xperia XZs is expected to arrive at some point following those, though no specific timeframe or date have been specified.
With regard to the camera issue itself, many users had reported that they were seeing visual distortions in photos taken with the devices – which each feature Sony’s new Motion Eye Camera technology. It should be noted that the issue doesn’t appear to be with the camera itself and instead seems to be reasonably consistent with the performance of wide-angle lenses in general. However, Sony managed to narrow the perceived problem down and, thankfully, was able to create a software-based fix for those users who are particularly sensitive to the effect. Unfortunately, the fix will require a couple of extra taps, since it apparently requires that users activate a toggleable option manually if they are seeing the issue on their handsets. That option has been labeled “Correction for image distortion,” and can be found by navigating to the settings menu in the dedicated camera app. Once turned on, it should correct for – or at least minimize the effect of – the issue.
It bears mention that users should probably not be too concerned if the update hasn’t hit their device yet, even if that device happens to be a Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Firmware rollouts tend to be among the more lengthy types of updates and rollouts themselves tend to take some time to complete.
