Google today released its latest Android distribution numbers, which reveal which versions of Android were used to access the Play Store during the seven-day period ending on January 9.
Android 7.0 and 7.1 Nougat’s usage grew during that time, finishing at 0.7 percent. To compare, Nougat appeared on 0.4 percent of devices in December 2016.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow also grew from December to January, going from 26.3 percent last month to 29.6 percent this month.
Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop weren’t quite so lucky, dropping in usage from 34 percent in December to 33.4 percent in January.
Android 4.4 KitKat fell, too, dropping from 24 percent in December to 22.6 percent in January. Meanwhile, Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean dropped from 12.8 percent in December to 11.6 percent in January. And then there’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which dropped from 1.2 percent in December to 1.1 percent in January.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread fell from 1.2 percent in December to 1.0 percent in January. And that’s where this month’s list ends, because Android 2.2 Froyo has officially dropped off Google’s graph, meaning that its usage has fallen below 0.1 percent.
While it’s disappointing that Nougat’s usage is still below one percent, that can be blamed on the fact that we haven’t seen many Nougat updates roll out beyond Google’s Nexus and Pixel devices. That should change in the coming months, though, as recent flagships from Samsung, HTC, and LG begin receiving their official Nougat updates.
