Google Teardown Hints At Language Settings Changes & More

A new teardown of the most recent version of the Google app has now been conducted, possibly revealing some new features to be added in future iterations. Among the findings are strings suggesting that some new language settings may be on the way for Google’s A.I.-empowered Assistant, in addition to Quartz, Home, and even some TV-related features. Of course, it bears mention that none of these features will necessarily find their way into the final Google app since these were found in the APK.

Starting things off, strings found in the code seem to suggest that new language settings for Google Assistant could be enabled that drastically change the way those settings work. Changing the setting for Google Home through the application appears to remain intact. However, for smartphones and tablets, strings have been added that appear to redirect users to their device’s settings app in order to set Assistant’s default language for that device. Tying the on-phone or on-tablet Assistant language option to that used by rest of the device by default should be helpful to new users as the feature spreads to new regions. Rather than trying to find where to change the setting from another, factory default, users will be able to use Assistant right out of the box. Tying into that, in the meantime, another line of code seems to suggest that Assistant will be able to recognize two languages simultaneously with a future update. The strings refer specifically to a “primary language” setting and a “secondary” language setting. Being able to set two languages could make devices with Assistant enabled easier to use in multilingual regions or households.

Beyond the language features, Googlers have also added strings which refer to a “Summer time mode.” Unfortunately, the only hint as to what that mode will be used for is from a user-facing message coded into the APK. Namely, that reads “Summer time mode is currently only available on Google Home devices. This setting will only affect devices that you set up.” Not much can be taken away from that except that it will only work on Google Home devices. Delving further into that, the app’s code also adds references to smart displays under the internal name “Jasper.” That’s separate from Google’s own screen-enabled devices, which have previously been referred to as “Quartz” in teardowns. Interestingly, the code appears alongside Google’s new inclusion of a message stating that Summer time mode only works with Google Home devices. That could indicate that there will be some features or function-based differentiation between Google-made smart home hubs with a display and those put out by third-party partners. Finally, the last new code found in the application’s teardown seems to point to a new type of listener being added to devices with Assistant. More directly, a string marked as “listening_for_tv_status” and including the text “Listening for TV…” has been added, though no further references are made to help determine what that will be used for.
