Google Play content can now be paid for through carrier billing on India’s Idea Cellular

The carrier Idea Cellular headquartered in India has worked with Google to allow direct carrier billing. This allows those on the carrier to pay for their Google Play purchases via their pre- or post-paid phone bills.

Not everyone in India has access to a credit card, in fact only 3% of residents in the country own one. Google says direct carrier billing is available in 41 countries (as seen in the map above) with this being its latest addition. This also makes over 100 total direct carrier billing partners.

Google is hoping this sparks growth in the app ecosystem, as it has done before with other carriers. Some even saw increases up to four times more purchases of apps or in-app purchases. Not only is this good for Google and smartphone users on Idea Cellular, it also helps out developers, who can reach more users in the territory. It’s a win for everyone. Let’s continue to hope this program expands to more carriers across new locations in the future.
