2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe breaks cover, the GLC with a sexy back

A year after the GLC Coupe Concept broke cover at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz went on to unveil the production version of the GLC Coupe. The concept car was mostly production-ready, but minor changes were made to the design apart from dropping the “Concept” moniker in its name.

As expected, the staggered quad tailpipes and flushed door handles didn’t make it to the production version of the GLC Coupe. However, it retains the sleek coupe silhouette that apes the bigger brother GLE Coupe. Although the GLC Coupe is based off the standard GLC, it’s actually 40mm lower and 80mm longer than the GLC.2016-Mercedes-Benz-GLC-Coupe-018

The interior is the carbon copy of the GLC (which was a copy of the W205 C-Class) therefore it’s a good thing, really; because we’ve sat in the C-Class and the GLC and found the swish cabin built to a high level of quality. Rear occupants’ headroom might have been sacrificed for that sloping roof line, and cargo capacity has shrunk by 59 litres to 491 litres compared to the normal GLC.

The GLC Coupe will be marketed as the GLC’s sportier sibling, and this is evident by the fitment of sports suspension and a revised steering ratio for a sharper handling.

At launch, the GLC Coupe will be offered in three four-cylinder variants that will be paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The petrol GLC 250 4MATIC develops 211 hp and 350 Nm, and there’s a couple of diesel options too; the GLC 220 d 4MATIC with 170 hp and 400 Nm, and the GLC 250 d 4MATIC with 205 hp and 500 Nm. A 320 hp plug-in hybrid variant called the GLC 350 e 4MATIC will be introduced later in the year, along with the AMG GLC 43 4MATIC that produces 367 hp and 520 Nm.2016-Mercedes-Benz-GLC-Coupe-010

The GLC Coupe is currently on display at the 2016 New York International Auto Show along with the recently-announced AMG GLC 43 4MATIC. In Malaysia, the GLC 250 4MATIC is selling for RM328,888, so a handsome premium over that will put the GLC Coupe in the Range Rover Evoque‘s price range. So, which one would you rather have?
