The all-new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has launched in Australia this week, ahead of going on sale to the pubic from next Monday.

In addition to announcing a high level of safety equipment for the top-specification Exceed model, the entire Mitsubishi Pajero Sport range is bolstered by a five-star ANCAP safety rating, seven airbags and an impressive 3100kg braked towing capacity — the latter placing it ahead of the recently released Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner.

The model range includes three variants — GLX, GLS and Exceed — with the range starting from $45,000 (before on-road costs) and moving up to $48,500 for the mid-specification GLS and topping out at $52,750 for the flagship Exceed.

The entire range is powered by the Triton ute’s Euro-5 compliant 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission — a Mitsubishi first.

Mitsubishi’s new gearbox helps reduce fuel consumption by 17 per cent compared with the Challenger, with the Pajero Sport claiming 8.0 litres per 100km across the range in comparison to the Challenger’s 9.8L/100km in automatic trim.

The entire range comes with a four-wheel-drive system with four drive modes and a mode selection system. The car predominantly operates in two-wheel-drive mode until the driver selects a four-wheel-drive mode with both a high-range and low-range gearbox option available. While a centre differential lock comes standard, a rear differential lock is not available.

Mitsubishi engineers have altered the Triton’s rear suspension setup by removing leaf springs and instead opting for a three-link coil-sprung rear. This move is in line with brands like Ford and Toyota, which have included a coil-sprung rear in their equivalent Everest and Fortuner.

Technology is at the forefront of the Pajero Sport offering with all models featuring DAB+ digital radio, Android Auto and Apple Car Play, making this one of the most technologically advanced infotainment offerings in the segment.

The range is available with six colours and comes with Mitsubishi’s five-year 100,000km new car warranty and servicing sits within 12 monthly or 15,000km intervals.
