Think there are more than a few untrained automobile drivers out there on the road with ya? You’re probably right. Maybe we should enforce some requirements of standard 1930s pilot training.
When you know your vehicle well enough, piloting that vehicle safely is a snap. Trouble is, most folks don’t have a clue. But not this guy.
Maybe more physical training is called for: Test those reflexes, mental stamina and depth perception.
Perhaps mechanical training could help: Short of being able to disassemble/reassemble your entire vehicle using only a Phillips screwdriver, a pair of flat-nose pliers and a ball of bailing wire; just a general understanding of the engine, transmission and tires might be a good start. Or embracing the concept of turn signals.
What we aim for: that first solo flight and getting home in one piece to tell the story, whether air- or land-based.
Some excellent advice, brought to you by Jam Handy, Chevrolet and the Army Air Corps operating out of Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas.
