The new Honda Civic Type-R hatchback will compete in this year’s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).
Honda Yuasa Racing revealed the Civic Type-R in racing guise overnight via its social media feeds. The car seen here is missing its final race livery, which will be unveiled at the 2015 season’s official media launch at the Donnington race track on March 24.
The Type-R race car was developed by Team Dynamics in Worcestershire. Work began back in September 2014 and the race car is reportedly based on the final production-spec Type-R sourced from Honda’s UK factory in Swindon.
While the road-going car musters 231kW/400Nm from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the BTCC version is said to develop 260kW/400Nm.
The new Civic Type-R BTCC race car will replace the Civic wagon that was used by the team during the 2014 season. The racing outfit claims that the new hatchback body shape “has increased down force … less drag and a more effective air flow management” compared to the wagon.
Among the changes made to the Type-R are side exhausts, a roll cage, redesigned front bumper, a BTCC-compliant rear wing, new side sills, and substantially wider front and rear wheel arches.
The 2015 BTCC season takes in 10 races, beginning on April 4 at Brands Hatch and concluding on October 11, again, at Brands Hatch.
