2016 Chevrolet Camaro to be revealed in May

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro will be revealed in two months’ time, breaking cover at a day-long celebration of the iconic American muscle car in Detroit on May 16.

Chevrolet overnight released a video teasing the new Camaro’s rorty engine note along with a new silver badge with the red, white and blue of the American flag.

The video is the latest in a string of teasers and leaks from the past few months that have allowed us to piece by piece learn more about the all-new pony car.

A video posted to YouTube on Friday celebrating 500,000 sales of the fifth-generation Camaro gave us our first look at the new model in motion, while shadowy images revealed last week and earlier in January provide an accurate look at the fastback’s silhouette that features a pointier nose and shorter body.

Based on General Motors’ rear-wheel-drive ‘Alpha’ platform that underpins the Cadillac ATS and CTS, the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro will be both shorter and lighter – by up to 180kg – than its predecessor.

Traditional high-performance V6 and V8 engines are set to be joined under the bonnet by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo motor, following the downsizing lead of the Ford Mustang, which launched in new-generation form with a 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo.

The Camaro is the car most likely to form the basis for Holden’s forthcoming V8-powered two-door sports coupe that was promised by GM executive vice president of consolidated international operations Stefan Jacoby earlier this year to fill the hole left by the Commodore from 2018.
