Chevrolet Volt pokes its head out at owners event

The next-generation Chevrolet Volt has poked its head out from beneath a white veil at an exclusive owners event in Hollywood, revealing its front-end design for the first time.

The teaser image confirms the Volt will be at home in General Motors’ global line-up, with a face reminiscent of both North America’s Chevrolet Impala and Australia’s own Holden Commodore.

The image uncovers the second-generation Volt’s lower and wider face, emphasised by its two broad silver grille panels, swept, slimline headlights, and upright LED daytime running lights that are pushed to the edges of the bumper.

This is Chevrolet’s third teaser for the new Volt, following a tightly cropped snap of its tailgate badging in August and a picture of the front half of a camouflaged test car in September.

The next generation Volt will debut at the 2015 NAIAS

The new Chevrolet Volt will debut at January’s Detroit auto show and go on sale in the US during 2015. Holden remains coy about the new Volt, with product communications senior manager Kate Lonsdale saying there’s no word at this stage on if the new model is coming our way, and if so when it will reach our shores.

Chevrolet announced fresh details about the charging technology of the new Volt at last night’s owners event. The new model introduces GPS location-based charging, allowing owners to set their ‘home’ charging preferences including charging level (eight amps or 12 amps) and charging times (to align with off-peak electricity rates).

It also introduces new charge status indicators, including audible tones for when charging has begun and when it has been delayed, and a series of interior light flashes to show the approximate charge level.

An illuminated charge port aims to make plugging in after dark easier. A longer 7.6-metre 120-volt portable cord will also be included, and is now stored on the left side of the Volt’s rear cargo area above the load floor.

The new Volt, reportedly built on the same underpinnings at the next-generation Cruze small car, is set to be significantly cheaper than the current car, as well as offer an improved EV range (currently claimed at 87km) and interior space (the current car is a four-seater with unconventional packaging).
