Mercedes-AMG won’t offer any diesel performance models – instead, the German performance brand will focus on petrol and hybridised models for its future go-fast cars.

Speaking with CarAdvice at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show, Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers said electrification is a way of the future that hardcore brands can’t ignore.

“Batteries and everything is getting lighter, so there’s a good improvement,” Moers said. “I always confirm that it is a matter of time. We’re not able to change the future.”

Moers couldn’t elaborate on a single model line that would adopt electrification as part of its performance credentials, but he asserted that no models are being ruled out.

“We’re not focused on one product, but yes, so far what we do is different research studies and pre-development things about electrification,” he said.

“Because, you know, we did an SLS AMG Electric Drive. So we have a lot of knowledge, and we know a lot about how to do that and how to handle it,” he said.

“Yes, we’re doing a lot of things regarding our whole portfolio, but nothing today on focus.”

Petrol is the only fuel that will be used by AMG models, according to Moers, who indicated that diesel simply doesn’t make sense for his brand.

“We had a diesel, long years ago – in the early 2000s we had a diesel. But in time, diesel is a very limited customership, and petrol engines are getting more and more efficient,” he said.
