VLN: Hard sixth round for Audi R8 LMS ultra teams at the Nürburgring

By Tarek Ramchani

The sixth round of the VLN Endurance Championship turned to be a very disappointing event for the Audi R8 LMS ultra in the upper SP9 class.

Two cars entered the 37. RCM DMV Grenzlandrennen and both cars faced a lot of bad luck and issues.

The #5 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Phoenix Racing finished down in fifty-sixth overall, three laps down to race winners. The car was driven by Marc Basseng, Frank Stippler and Roman Rusinov who qualified in fifth place earlier this morning. Their Audi was hit by technical issues in the very first lap of the race preventing them from battling for race lead and top spots.

The #44 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Twin Busch Motorsport was unlucky as well. The car in the hands of the Busch brothers, Dennis and Marc did not finish the 4-hour event and was forced to retire on lap 14.

Overall race victory went to the #30 Porsche 997 GT3 R from Frikadelli Racing. Second place went to the #20 BMW Z4 GT3 from BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert. The #6 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 from Rowe Racing was third.

Nürburgring 24 Hours: Second row on the grid for Phoenix at the Nürburgring

Audi Press Release

  • Christian Mamerow third-fastest with Phoenix Racing
  • Third row of the grid for Audi R8 LMS ultra of Frank Stippler
  • Three Audi cars in the top ten
Ingolstadt/Nürburg, Juni 20, 2014 – The five Audi teams successfully finished their preparations for the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in the top-30 qualifying session. All eight race cars had qualified for the shoot-out laps and three of them managed to leap into the top ten.

Four different marques in the top four positions of the grid underscore the competitiveness in the GT3 class this year. Phoenix Racing qualified for a second row as the best Audi team. With a lap time of 8m 14.117s, Phoenix driver Christian Mamerow in the shoot-out session improved the provisional qualifying time set by car #4 on a dry track the day before by 7.3 seconds. He will be tackling the race together with Christopher Haase, René Rast and Markus Winkelhock. The team of Ernst Moser, based in Meuspath, will also provide the second-best Audi on the grid at its home round: Frank Stippler achieved the sixth-best lap time. The 2012 winner is sharing car #3 with Marc Basseng, Marcel Fässler and Laurens Vanthoor.

The third Audi driver in the top ten was Pierre Kaffer. The professional race driver, who is sharing the cockpit with extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner, Frank Biela and Marco Werner, qualified in eighth place for the Audi race experience.

Prosperia C. Abt Racing in positions 12 and 19, G-Drive Racing in 17th place, the second car of the Audi race experience in 26th place and the Twinbusch Audi in position 28, completed the results for Audi on the first 14 rows of the grid. The starting order is, however, of secondary importance for the five squads. The crucial aspect was to have come up with a set-up in the practice and qualifying sessions that would give all the drivers a good base for the duration of the 24-hour race. The Audi teams also used the time up to the qualifying session for thorough technical preparations of their R8 LMS ultra cars for the 24-hour race.

The race will be started at 16.00 on Saturday. The fans lining the Nordschleife can look forward to a special appearance preceding the race, as Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler will be driving a lap on the Nordschleife in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. On TV, the fans can watch the race for more than 15 hours on Sport1. The YouTube channel ADACZurich24hRennen and Fan TV that can be received on location via the DVB-T channel 27 are airing live broadcasts of Germany’s major endurance race as well.

Selected quotes

Romolo Liebchen (Head of Audi Sport customer racing): “We’re generally pleased with the qualifying results. We’ve put ourselves in a good position. We deliberately didn’t battle for the fastest time because we didn’t want to take an excessive risk. The gaps in the field are close, which means we can expect to see an interesting race.”

Christian Mamerow (Audi R8 LMS ultra #4/Phoenix Racing): “I was a bit surprised about how fast we can be on a single lap. I could hardly have driven any faster. The gaps up to position ten are very close. Our car felt good – ‘thank you’ for this to the team. We’re thoroughly prepared, have got a good driver line-up and feel competitive.”

Audi teams in Nürburgring 24 Hours: Sights set on victory

Audi Press Release

  • Eifel endurance race with eight Audi R8 LMS ultra cars
  • Five Audi teams in Audi GT3 sports cars
  • Two 24-hour races in a single week

Ingolstadt, June 16, 2014 – Back-to-back races: Only six days after the iconic endurance race at Le Mans, the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring will start on Saturday, June 21. Five Audi teams with eight Audi R8 LMS ultra cars will be battling for victory in the Eifel endurance race. With the current Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler at the wheel, as well as Pierre Kaffer, René Rast, Nicki Thiim, Richard Westbrook and Roman Rusinov, six drivers are even contesting both of these important 24-hour races.

After the Audi R8 LMS ultra took class victory in the Nürburgring 24 Hours three times between 2009 and 2011, Audi Sport Team Phoenix celebrated the first overall victory for Audi in 2012. In 2014, Phoenix Racing is again fielding two factory-backed Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. All four Nürburgring winners from 2012 are again running for the squad based in the Eifel but are assigned to the two cockpits in new line-ups. Marc Basseng (D) and Frank Stippler (D) will receive the 2011, 2012 and 2014 Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler (CH) and the 2013 FIA GT Champion Laurens Vanthoor (B) as team-mates in the car designated as number 3. The 2012 Nürburgring winners Christopher Haase (D) and Markus Winkelhock (D) will be sharing the sister car with the Nordschleife specialist Christian Mamerow (D) and the three-time Supercup Champion René Rast (D).

The Audi customer teams are bringing a strong line-up to the Nürburgring as well. The GT specialists Alexander Müller (D), Marco Seefried (D) and Richard Westbrook (GB) will be sharing one of the two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars of the Prosperia C. Abt Racing team with last year’s winner Nicki Thiim (DK). The other race car is occupied by four seasoned Nordschleife campaigners: Christer Jöns (D), Niclas Kentenich (D), Christopher Mies (D) and Dominik Schwager (D) are driving the number ‘10’ Audi R8 LMS ultra.

The squad of G-Drive Racing relies on an international line-up. Audi factory driver Nico Müller (CH) from the DTM is making his debut in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring alongside Roman Rusinov (RUS), Edward Sandström (S) and ex-Le Mans winner Stéphane Ortelli (MC).

Team Twin Busch Motorsport is contesting the classic endurance race at the Nürburgring for the second time with Audi. Three drivers from last year – the brothers Dennis and Marc Busch (D) and Manuel Lauck (D) – will be on the grid, supported by Stefan Landmann (A).

As in previous years, the Audi race experience is fielding two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars in which fast Audi customers are competing together with seasoned race drivers. Ex-DTM driver Rahel Frey is sharing a cockpit with Dominique Bastien (USA), Christian Bollrath (D) and Christiaan Frankenhout (NL). In the second car, record stratosphere jumper Felix Baumgartner (A) is making his debut in the 24-hour race. The extreme athlete, who has been meticulously preparing for his new task during the past months, is supported by the seasoned sports car car campaigners and former Le Mans winners Marco Werner (D) and Frank Biela (D), plus Pierre Kaffer (D).

Entries for a total of 175 cars with about 650 race drivers have been submitted for Germany’s major race, including more than 30 GT3 sports cars. 2014 is seeing several changes. 30 instead of the previous 40 teams will be battling for the best grid positions in the final qualifying session on Friday. For the first time, in the four rounds of the VLN Endurance Championship and in qualifying for the new qualification race in April, 19 teams, including six of the eight Audi R8 LMS ultra cars, were able to secure slots for the top 30 qualifying session in advance. The #4 and #16 Audi R8 LMS ultra cars will be competing for the remaining eleven top 30 qualifying slots in the two qualifying sessions on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Live TV coverage of the race will be provided on Sport1 for more than 15 hours. The YouTube-Channel ADACZurich24hRennen and Fan TV that can be received on location via DVB-T channel 27 will also air coverage of the event. In 2013, seven national TV stations carried reports with a total duration of 29:44 hours. In addition, there were 89:50 hours of international broadcasts by 196 channels.

Quotes by the officials

Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing: “There can only be one aim for the 24-hour race this year: victory. In addition to two factory-backed Audi R8 LMS ultra cars of Team Phoenix Racing, which are occupied by absolute top drivers, six other, very strong customer cars are on the grid, which are in contention for top positions as well. Audi Sport customer racing will optimally support all teams in their race in the ‘Green Hell’ by customer sport advisors and a supporting infrastructure. After the first VLN races, it’s difficult for me to assess who will be among the favorites. We’re expecting a very close field in which at least 15 cars from five manufacturers will be in contention for victory. But in the end, there’s also a bit of fortune involved in deciding success. We’ve prepared very carefully and are hoping that in the end an Audi R8 LMS ultra will be at the very front.”

Selected quotes from each driver team

Marcel Fässler, Audi R8 LMS ultra #3 (Phoenix Racing)
“Two 24-hour races in a single week are a program of mammoth proportions. After the race at L Mans, I’m immediately going to fly home to recharge my batteries so that I’ll be able to draw on 100 percent of my energy again for the start at the Nürburgring. I started training for this double strike in winter. Our aim is victory. I’m still lacking a triumph in the Nürburgring 24 Hours in my CV, although I came pretty close by taking third place in 2011. The Audi R8 LMS ultra is competitive but our rivals are hard to judge, as many teams traditionally don’t show their full potential in the VLN races.”

Markus Winkelhock, Audi R8 LMS ultra #4 (Phoenix Racing)
“Unlike a sprint race, the 24-hour race is extremely strenuous physically. I prepared for this and specifically worked on my fitness. This is my fifth start in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, so I know the track very well by now. Another positive aspect: In Christopher Haase, Christian Mamerow and René Rast I’ve got three experienced and fast team-mates and in Phoenix Racing a strong team that’s backing us. Our aim again is to clinch overall victory.”

Nicki Thiim, Audi R8 LMS ultra #9 (Prosperia C. Abt Racing)
“Arriving at the 24-hour race as last year’s winner does not increase the pressure on me. But I know how hard it is to win this race. 15 to 20 teams can probably be expected to be in contention for victory. But I’m certain that in my team-mates Alexander Müller, Marco Seefried and Richard Westbrook we’ve got a strong driver squad and in the Audi R8 LMS ultra a good car, and that Prosperia C. Abt Racing is perfectly prepared as well. But it also takes some fortune to win this race.”

Christopher Mies, Audi R8 LMS ultra #10 (Prosperia C. Abt Racing)
“For me, the 24-hour race is a special event. The Nürburgring is my home track. This is where I drove the largest number of races. The atmosphere is tremendous. This is one of Germany’s major races. You can take in a lot of the atmosphere on the Nordschleife in the cockpit. When I drove at night for the first time, I was surprised by the fog wafting across the tarmac until I realized it was smoke from the barbecues. As far as our chances go: I judge the competition to be very strong. But at Prosperia C. Abt Racing we’ve got two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars occupied by seasoned Nordschleife campaigners.”

Dennis Busch, Audi R8 LMS ultra #16 (Twin Busch Motorsport powered by Kumho Tyre)
“For our team, this is the second 24-hour race at the Nürburgring with the Audi R8 LMS ultra. My brother Marc and I’ve been driving on the Nordschleife since 2007 and in Manuel Lauck and Stefan Landmann we’ve been able to gain two other experienced Nordschleife drivers. We’re hoping to get through the race without any incidents this year, and if that’s the case a place in the top ten would be our goal.”

Nico Müller, Audi R8 LMS ultra #17 (G-Drive Racing)
“The contrast to the DTM is stark. This is my first 24-hour race and the Nordschleife is new for me. It’s not only long but also extremely demanding and you’ve got to slowly explore your limit. I feel very comfortable in the team of G-Drive Racing. Stéphane Ortelli knows the Audi R8 LMS ultra well and Edward Sandström is giving me valuable tips about the track. As Stéphane and I’ve got only little Nordschleife experience I don’t see us in the role of favorites. But if all goes well we’ve got good outsiders’ chances.”

Rahel Frey, Audi R8 LMS ultra #18 (Audi race experience)
“This is my second 24-hour race with the Audi race experience. I’d like to convey the fascination of Audi to the customers and accompany them in this race. My team-mates have already driven two races and are looking forward to this run. We’re realistic: for us, it’s about finishing and experiencing a nice race. But personally I’ll of course be pleased if I can drive a fast race lap now and then or put our Audi R8 LMS ultra in a forward position in qualifying.”

Frank Biela, Audi R8 LMS ultra #502 (Audi race experience)
“This race is truly a challenge for all drivers – be they seasoned campaigners or rookies. The demands made on the drivers and cars are massive on a track of more than 25 kilometers. I’m eager to see Felix Baumgartner’s run. He’s shown outstanding performances in other sports and meticulously prepared for this race but is still relatively new in motorsport. In Marco Werner and Pierre Kaffer I’ve got two team-mates I know well. If all goes well, a top-ten result would be a great thing.”

VLN: Audi teams 2013 season review

By Tarek Ramchani and Johan Laubscher

The Audi brand had a very strong year in the VLN Endurance Championship during 2013. No less than four overall victories with the Audi R8 LMS ultra, as well as multiple class wins with the Audi TT RS.

Phoenix Racing was the best Audi team in the Nürburgring Nordschleife based series this year, with three outright victories. The fourth win came from the Twin Busch Motorsport team.

The season review has been compiled from the 2013 Audi Motorsport Blog Weekend Round Up posts. Each round has been added as was seen in the individual Weekend Round Up posts during 2013, which can be accessed via the links throughout the review below:

Round 1: 60. ADAC Westfalenfahrt

The first round of the VLN championship was set to take place this weekend. The dangerous weather conditions unfortunately led to the cancelation of the race meeting. This was the second cancellation as the official VLN test day was also cancelled, which would have taken place last weekend.

Round 2: 38. DMV 4-Stunden-Rennen

Round two of the VLN finally got the season underway this weekend, following round one and the test day being cancelled due to bad weather in recent weeks. Twelve Audis were entered at this round, which included three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. The Audis battled during qualifying and the highest placed R8 LMS ultra in the race was the Twin Busch entry in eighth overall. Behind the fight up front there was an Audi 1-2-3 finish in the SP3T class.

Round 3: 55. ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup

Round three of the VLN took place in chaotic conditions. The race got underway in torrential rain and cold temperatures, and finished on a drying track with the competitors on slicks. Victory went to the #5 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra which was driven by Marcel Fässler and Frank Stippler. A total of seven Audi R8 LMS ultra cars took part in round three. Behind the top SP9 class (R8 LMS ultra cars) there was further Audi success with Audi TT RS cars winning the SP3T and SP4T classes.

Round 4: 44. Adenauer ADAC Simfy Trophy

The first VLN round following the Nürburgring 24 Hours was held this weekend. A total of ten Audis were entered, which included three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. The race was stopped early due to a fatality. Wolf Silvester sadly passed away whilst driving an Opel in the event. The race was classified with the victory going to the #15 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra with drivers Frank Stippler, Ferdinand Stuck and Johannes Stuck - however the result does become rather academic given the tragic events which had occurred. R.I.P. Wolf Silvester.

Round 5: 53. ADAC Reinoldus-Langstreckenrennen

Round five of the VLN was held at the Nurburgring this weekend. A total of nine Audis were at the event. Two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars were entered from Phoenix Racing and Twin Busch Motorsport. Unfortunately only one R8 LMS ultra competed, following a technical problem on the Twin Busch car. The Phoenix Racing R8 LMS ultra finished fourth. The Raeder Motorsport TT RS won the SP3T class and it was also an Audi 1-2, as an Audi TTS finished second in SP3T.

Round 6: Opel 6 Stunden ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen

The VLN resumed at the Nürburgring this weekend, round six with the Six Hour ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-race. A total of sixteen Audis took part, which included six Audi R8 LMS ultra cars, multiple TT RS cars and more. The big news was the three car team entered by Phoenix Racing, spearheaded by the return of Hans-Joachim Stuck alongside his two sons in the #15 Audi. Saturday morning started very well as the #37 Phoenix Audi took pole position. Unfortunately Hans-Joachim Stuck suffered a crash during qualifying. The damaged #15 Audi was unable to compete in the six hour event due to the sustained damage. The race itself finished with excellent performances from the Audi teams. Phoenix Racing finished second and third with their two remaining Audi R8 LMS ultra cars, and the Audi TT RS teams took victory in the SP3T and SP4T classes.

Round 7: 36. RCM DMV Grenzlandrennen

The German VLN Endurance Championship held its seventh round of the season at the Nürburgring. It was an unlucky race for the R8 LMS ultra competitors, but it was certainly a good day for the Audi TT RS entrants. Only two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars were entered this weekend, a single entry each from Twin Busch Motorsport and Phoenix Racing. The Audi TT RS teams stole the show for Audi during the four hour VLN race. LMS Engineering made it a victorious comeback and debut for their #1 Audi TT RS. They achieved class pole position, class victory and they finished in a very impressive sixth overall. It was also an Audi 1-2-3-4-5-6 in SP3T, as the #334 Møller Bil Motorsport TT RS finished second ahead of the Raeder Motorsport #331 TT RS in third and the #290 TT RS in fourth. Audi TTS race cars also finished fifth and sixth in SP3T. The TT RS clean sweep was completed by the Rotek Racing #249 taking victory in SP4T. Both Audi R8 LMS ultra entries faced problems during the race. The #15 Phoenix Audi finished twenty-fifth overall and the Twin Busch Motorsport #44 Audi unfortunately retired after running as high as second.

Round 8: 45. ADAC Barbarossapreis

The eighth round of the VLN Endurance Championship was held at the Nürburgring this weekend. A total of seven Audis were entered. Only one Audi R8 LMS ultra was entered this weekend, the #44 Audi entry from Twin Busch Motorsport in the SP9 class. An army of six Audi TT cars were also entered. Three TT RS cars were entered in SP3T, joined by one TT and one TTS. One TT RS was entered in SP4T. The Audi Sport customer racing developed TT RS entries included Raeder Motorsport, Møller Bil Motorsport and Rotek Racing. During qualifying the Twin Busch R8 LMS ultra was the highest place Audi in eighth overall. There was an Audi 1-2-3-4 at the top of the SP3T class. The #331 Raeder Motorsport Audi TT RS took pole in SP3T and the #249 Rotek Racing TT RS took pole in SP4T. The race concluded with the #44 Twin Busch Audi R8 LMS ultra unfortunately running low on fuel during the final lap, while they were running as high as second. The fuel miscalculation cost the team and they were ultimately classified as a non finisher. SP3T was dominated by the Audi TT RS cars, as the #331 Raeder entry won the class ahead of the #334 Møller Bil TT RS and the #290 TT RS in third. Rotek Racing won the SP4T class.
