VLN: Frustrating fourth round for the Audi teams at the Nürburgring

By Tarek Ramchani

The legendary Nürburgring Nordscheleife hosted today the fourth round of the VLN Endurance Championship. The Ergebnis Rennen - 45. Adenauer ADAC simfy-Trophy turned to be a frustrating event to the Audi squad.

Five Audi R8 LMS ultra cars have entered the event with some bad luck and mixed results in the end. None of the five Audis made it into the Top 10.

Best ranked Audi ended in twelfth position with a car from Prosperia C. Abt Racing. The #16 R8 LMS ultra was shared by Christopher Mies, Richard Westbrook, Christer Jöns and Marco Seefried.

The #11 R8 LMS ultra from Audi race experience was fourteenth with drivers Marco Werner, Christian Frankenhout and Christian Bollrath. The sister #22 from Audi race experience was twenty-fourth with Audi legend Frank Biela and The Red Bull Stratos legend Felix Baumgartner.

The Twin Busch Motorsport #44 Audi R8 LMS ultra was thirtieth overall with borther Dennis and Marc Busch, they were joined by Christian Mamerow.

Unfortunately, the second entry from Prosperia C. Abt Racing was not classified. The #17 Audi R8 LMS ultra in the hands of Dominik Schwager, Niclas Kentenich , Alexander Müller and Luca Ludwig was forced to retire seven laps into the race.

Overall race win went to the #3 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 from Black Falcon. Second was the #25 BMW Z4 GT2 from BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS. Third place for #30 Porsche 997 GT3 R from  Frikadelli Racing Team. VLN Round 4 results can be seen here.

Today's 4-hour race was the last event before the big Nürburgring 24 Hours. The VLN Endurance Championship will resume July the 5th with the 54. ADAC Reinoldus-Langstreckenrennen.

GT Open: Team Novadriver with an Audi R8 LMS ultra at the Nürburgring

By Tarek Ramchani

The 2014 International GT Open season will kick off this weekend at the Nürburgring. Two Audi R8 LMS ultra will enter the event including one from Team Novadriver.

The Portuguese Audi Sport customer racing team is back with Audi for the fifth straight year. The team managed by Cesar Campanico won multiple GT titles races wins in Portugal and Europe.

The International GT Open is a familier series for Team Novadriver and their Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. At the Nürburgring only one car will be fielded. The #58 Audi R8 LMS ultra will be shared by César Campaniço and Aditya Patel from India.

There is a big change this year in International GT Open rules. GT Sport, the series promoters and organisers merged Super GT (GT2 cars) and GTS (GT3 cars) into a single and unified class using a special Balance of Performance. Therefore the Audi R8 LMS ultra will be able to to target overall race wins in the Spanish based series. In Germany, Team Novadriver will be eager to fight for top spots and collect big points.

The second Audi effort at the Nürburgring is coming from Team Spirit Race. Their #69 Audi R8 LMS ultra will be driven by Suzanne Weidt and Dietmar Haggenmüller.

VLN: Audi TT RS victories in SP4T and SP3T at the Nürburgring

By Johan Laubscher

The German VLN Endurance Championship held its sixth meeting of the season at the Nürburgring today. It was an unlucky race for the R8 LMS ultra competitors, but it was certainly a good day for the Audi TT RS entrants.

Only two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars were entered this weekend, a single entry each from Twin Busch Motorsport and Phoenix Racing.

Twin Busch Motorsport was the highest placed Audi during qualifying, having taken fourth place ahead of the Phoenix car in ninth. The #1 LMS Engineering TT RS claimed eighteenth overall and pole in the SP3T class. Rotek Racing and their #249 TT RS was on pole for the SP4T class, twenty-forth overall.

The Audi TT RS teams stole the show for Audi at the four hour VLN race today. LMS Engineering made it a victorious comeback and debut for their #1 Audi TT RS. They achieved class pole position, class victory and they finished in a very impressive sixth overall. It was also an Audi 1-2-3-4-5-6 in SP3T, as the #334 Møller Bil Motorsport TT RS finished second ahead of the Raeder Motorsport #331 TT RS in third and the #290 TT RS in fourth. Audi TTS race cars also finished fifth and sixth in SP3T. The TT RS clean sweep was completed by the Rotek Racing #249 taking victory in SP4T.

Both Audi R8 LMS ultra entries faced problems today. The #15 Phoenix Audi finished twenty-fifth overall and the Twin Busch Motorsport #44 Audi unfortunately retired after running as high as second.

The next VLN round will be taking place on 28 September.

Nürburgring 24 Hours: Top five for Phoenix Racing and Audi TT RS class victories

By Johan Laubscher

The Nürburgring 24 Hours was held over the long weekend (Whitsun) in Germany. A total of seventeen Audi cars took part, eight of which were Audi R8 LMS ultra entries.

A large field of SP9 (GT3) cars took part and the Audis showed good pace. Frank Stippler was able to put in a tremendous qualifying lap to take pole in the #4 Phoenix R8 LMS ultra. The race got underway with a dry track and a very fast pace. The Audis lead initially and remained within the lead battle. As the race approached midnight the weather worsened and the race was red flagged for safety. The cars were brought back to the pits to wait for the restart, whilst the 24 Hours carried on counting down.

The race was restarted at 08:00 and a nine hour race to the flag begun in continuing wet conditions which did dry out eventually. The #1 Audi R8 LMS ultra remained near the front and ultimately it was the top placed Audi finishing in fifth overall. The Audi TT RS cars won the SP4T and SP3T classes. Three Audis finished within the top ten overall, all three from Phoenix Racing.

Audi customers at Nürburgring on grid positions one and three

Audi Press Release

  •          Frank Stippler posts best time in Audi R8 LMS ultra of Phoenix Racing
  •          Christian Mamerow for Prosperia C. Abt Team Mamerow on second row
  •          Three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars in top five

Ingolstadt/Nürburg, May 18, 2013 – The quickest Audi customers have completed their preparations for the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring with a very good qualifying result on the first three rows of the grid. The team of Ernst Moser is particularly happy: In the Eifel, the squad with the Audi R8 LMS ultra of Frank Stippler is at the very front, whereas Mike Rockenfeller in the Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM starts from the top spot of the grid at Brands Hatch in the DTM.

Frank Stippler starts the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2013 where he finished the past race: in first place. In the final qualifying session, last year’s winner achieved the best time in the single timed laps of the top 40 teams. The local hero from Bad Münstereifel in the Audi R8 LMS ultra #4 of Phoenix Racing posted a time of 8m 17.212s.

The second-best Audi customer team in the Eifel was Prosperia C. Abt Team Mamerow. Christian Mamerow completed the lap around the circuit as the third-fastest driver in 8m 19.073s. On his second outing, the race driver from Waltrop was no longer able to improve his time when he was slowed by a car in front.

Team G-Drive Racing by Phoenix provided the third-best Audi in the field. Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler completed the lap around the Nordschleife including the Grand Prix circuit in 8m 20.320s. Another R8 team – the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT – qualified for one of the top ten grid positions. The Swede Edward Sandström drove the tenth-best time of 8m 22.055s. The other Audi customer teams achieved positions 18 (G-Drive Racing by Phoenix #3), 24 (Audi race experience #14), 27 (Audi R8 LMS ultra #16) and 29 (Audi race experience #15). The race will start on Sunday at 17:00.

Selected quotes

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport):
“It’s nice to see that Audi’s customer sport concept that has been put into practice this year is working out well at the Nürburgring. With the support from Audi Sport customer racing, the teams have prepared in a way that put four Audi R8 LMS ultra cars on the first five rows of the grid. My congratulations go to Frank Stippler and his team Phoenix who achieved the best time.”

Romolo Liebchen (Head of Audi Sport customer racing):
“Our customers were running superbly. They continued what we started with a factory-backed commitment. That makes us proud because it shows that our product is competitive in the customer’s hands as well. Qualifying, however, was just an initial, small step into the race and therefore shouldn’t be overestimated.”

Frank Stippler (Audi R8 LMS ultra #4/Phoenix Racing):
“Catching a clear lap on the Nordschleife is really something special. With my 38 years, I’ve never experienced this on this track before – neither in racing nor in tourist driving. It was a great qualifying session and I’m pleased to accept this position but it’s nearly meaningless for a 24-hour race.”

Qualifying results

1 Frank Stippler (Audi R8 LMS ultra #4) 8m 17.212s
2 Pedro Lamy (Aston Martin #7) 8m 18.362s

5 Marcel Fässler (Audi R8 LMS ultra #1) 8m 20.025s
6 Sean Edwards (Mercedes #9) 8m 20.320s
7 Maxime Martin (BMW #25) 8m 21.007s
8 Jens Klingmann (BMW #20) 8m 21.036s

By Tarek Ramchani

Round 3 of the VLN Endurance Series was held yesterday, the ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup 4-hour race. Very hard conditions on track, with extreme cold weather and heavy rain. Audi was victorious in the end with the #5 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra, driven by Marcel Fässler and Frank Stippler.

A full field of GT3 cars (SP9) entered the event, the final VLN race before the demanding Nürburgring 24 Hours. Seven Audi R8 LMS ultra cars too part. Fässler and Stippler crossed the finish line victorious with a minute gap ahead of the second placed BMW Z4 GT3 from BMW Team Schubert, third was the Timbuli Racing Porsche 997 GT3 R.

Video: The speed of silence: Onboard the R8 e-tron Nürburgring lap record run

By Johan Laubscher

A few weeks ago Audi set a new lap record at the Nürburgring. The red Audi R8 e-tron became the production electric car lap record holder around the green hell. The most notable fact from the record run was the silence of the car heading around the race circuit. Today Audi released an onboard video from the record breaking run. Even more so in this video the eerie silence is present as the electric motors power the R8 e-tron around the circuit for its 8 minute and 9.099 second run.

Audi Sport Team Phoenix wants victory at VLN 6 hours race

By Tarek Ramchani

Round seven of the VLN Endurance Series at the Nordschleife this weekend. Five Audi R8 LMS ultra cars are set to race the 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen. The longest event of the VLN calendar.

Audi Sport Team Phoenix fresh from a historical victory at the Spa 24 hours last weekend are fielding a pair of factory supported Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. The #5 cars will be shared by Christopher Haase, Christer Jöns and Luca Ludwig. Christopher Haase finished second overall last weekend in a WRT run R8 LMS ultra at the Spa 24 Hours. Christer Jöns is an Audi regular in ADAC GT Masters and has won the Bathurst 12 Hours earlier this season with team Phoenix.

The sister #15 Bilstein backed Audi R8 LMS ultra will be in the hands of veterans Marc Basseng, Frank Stippler and youngster René Rast. Stippler and Rast won the Spa 24 Hours together, while Stippler along with Basseng won last time out in VLN.

Two Audi R8 LMS ultra will come from the Audi race experience team. The #11 Audi will have Florian Gruber,
Luca Cappellari and Christian Bollrath as drivers. The second #22 car will be driven by Michael Erlich, Aditya Patel and team leader Marco Werner. Audi race experience is run by TKL Motorsport, an effort set up for Audi customers.

The fifth Audi R8 LMS ultra is entered by team Raeder Motorsport. The #44 Audi will have a trio of fast and experienced drivers, Christian Hohenadel, Thomas Mutsch, and Audi legend Frank Biela. The trio have a third place finish as their best result so far at round 5.

The Audi R8 LMS teams will have to fight a very strong and large field of top SP9 cars. Manthey Racing is fielding a very strong Porsche 997 GT3 R for Audi regulars Romain Dumas and a returning Timo Bernard, his first race after the nasty crash at Sebring with an Audi R18 ultra. Other strong rivals will come from the pair of ROWE Racing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 and a BMW Z4 GT3 from Team Schubert.

In addition to the Audi R8 LMS ultra cars in the top SP9 class (GT3), four Audi TT RS cars will also enter the SP4T class. The factory quattro GmbH built cars will try to fight hard for overall positions and to finish in the top 10 outright.

The qualifying is set for Saturday morning while the race will start at 12:00 local time.

Mixed Fortunes in Germany for United Autosports in British GT Championship Round 2

United Autosports Press Release

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes around the legendary Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit for United Autosports during the second round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.

Feature Race

Saturday

Qualifying: 12th         No 23             Bell 1.44.309             Weather: Dry, Cold.

Race Result: 6th                                                                  Weather: Dry, Cool.

After a disappointing result in Fridays race, the United Autosports team opted to make some small set-up changes to the Audi R8 LMS GT3 to accommodate the cooler temperatures around the Nurburgring circuit.

From 11th on the grid for race two Matt didn’t quite get the start he wanted losing position as they headed into the tight first corner. As the race settled down he set about the task ahead but could not find a way to join in the battle at the front of the field. At the pit-stop window on lap 16 he handed over to Charles Bateman and a superb pit-stop by the United Autosports team saw him rejoin in 10th.  Charles then got to work delivering a solid performance, enjoying a great battle with Jann Mardenborough in the No 35 Nissan GTR GT3 managing to pull out a half a second gap. He then set his sights on Hector Lester in the No 3 Rosso Verde Ferrari passing him easily to take sixth. With five minutes to go Charles was again under pressure from Mardenborough and after a close fought charge between the two he finally crossed the line in sixth to give the team a point scoring finish in what was a tough weekend all round in Germany.

Matt Bell (UK), Age 22. Born: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. Lives Barningham, UK

“ That was another tough race. I lost a place at the start going into the first corner when the faster cars just blasted past me. I held on for the rest of my stint, but the car is really off the pace so it made any fight on track difficult. It was a case of looking after the car as best I could and having a good in-lap to hand the car over to Charles. The only shock was when my side window popped, and the glass shattered as I was flat out in fifth gear. That was interesting. It was frustrating, but we will be looking to improve as we head back to the UK and the next round at Rockingham.”

Charles Bateman (UK), Age 24. Born: Boston, Lincs UK. Lives: Boston, Lincs

“The team did a great pit stop and even had time to clean the glass from the seat before I got in. I had a good out lap and headed back into the race. I enjoyed my battle with Jann Mardenborough and Hector Lester. I knew the cars were much quicker so I tucked in behind hoping that someone would make a mistake. It didn’t happen, but I was fairly happy with the end result today. We just need to keep scoring points now to put ourselves back in the championship hunt.”

Richard Dean (UK), Team Owner and Managing Director of United Autosports

“Friday’s race is one to forget. Everything that could have gone wrong did, and it was very frustrating. Charles didn’t get the start that he would have wanted losing places, then a spin, contact on track, and a drive through penalty, so it couldn’t have got any worse. Today, we approached it as professionals and the drivers made the best of what they have available to them. The balance of performance is definitely not in our favor, and they couldn’t have gotten anymore out of the car. If luck had been on our side, we could have pushed for a podium. We only needed a safety car to pull the leaders back, and we could have been in the mix. The Championship organisers have got to slow the Porsche, Nissan, and Aston Martin down to close the gap. Taking all that into consideration I am delighted with the result today.

Race 1 Friday

Qualifying:                 8th        No 23   Bateman 1.45.487 Weather Cold, Dry.

Race Result:            12th     No 23                                     Weather Damp, Drying.

On a damp but drying track after a short rain shower, Charles made a strong start off the line making up several places to run in fourth. Then as they approached the first corner, he lost his advantage after several cars made contact in front of him. Charles then set about hunting down the leaders and made a superb move around the No 33 car of Jon Minshaw. A three-way battle with Jody Firth (No 15) and David Jones (No 22) ended in contact with Firth, and he found himself in 11th. After 29 minutes of racing he headed into the pits in 10th to swap with Matt Bell.

Once on track Matt did his best to make up position despite experiencing handling issues with the Audi R8 LMS. With twenty minutes, to go he got past Joe Osbourne to move himself into ninth. A stop-go penalty was handed to the team resulting from the earlier incident between Charles and Jodie Firth. With five minutes left on the clock Matt was battling hard with Allan Simonson, but he unable to hold him off and crossed the line in the Audi R8 LMS in 12th.

Matt Bell (UK), Age 22. Born: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. Lives Barningham, UK

“That was a really disappointing race. We seemed to have some drive shaft issues, and I couldn’t engage the gear. At one point I was keeping pace with the Porsches and Ferraris but the handling of the car just didn’t feel right. Despite that my, lap times were coming down gradually and then we got a stop-go penalty that put us further back. Towards the end of my stint, the handling of the car was really difficult and I was struggling to keep pace after a four-lap battle with Allan Simonson. We need to take a look at the balance of performance of our car. We are really off the pace and shouldn’t be.  We will go back now and have a look at the data to see what we can find before the race tomorrow.

Charles Bateman (UK), Age 24. Born: Boston, Lincs UK. Lives: Boston, Lincs, UK

“I got a good start and managed to gain three places going into the first corner, but I struggled to hold position as the car was off the pace. Then, I had an incident with the No 15 car of Jody Firth who pretty much stopped on the apex to the corner, and I couldn’t avoid him. I’m really disappointed in the performance of the car and in myself. Tomorrow is a different day so we will do what we can to put ourselves in a better position.”

Audi unlucky season opener at Nordschleife's VLN

By Tarek Ramchani

The VLN Endurance Series started yesterday at the world famous Nordschleife. Three Audi R8 LMS race cars entered the first round of this unique sportscar championship.

A single brand new Audi R8 LMS ultra was entered by Phoenix Racing the #5 car of Oliver Jarvis and Rene Rast. The other two cars were older Spec R8 LMSs. The sister Phoenix #15 for Frank Stippler, Christopher Haase and Markus Winkelhock. Team Raeder Motorsport entered the third car with Frank Biela, Thomas Mutsch and Christian Hohenadel.

Right from the start it was obvious the race would not be easy at all. The Porsche GT3-R cars dominated the early stages of the race battling with each other ahead of the field. The Audi cars had to chase and catch up. The #5 Phoenix was the best from the Audi camp racing in the top 5 overall in the first part of the race. Later the first disaster came, the #15 Phoenix car crashed while it was in the lead overall. A few minutes later and it was the turn of the #44 R8 LMS from Raeder Motorsport to crash. Bad luck didn't stop hitting the Audi squad and the #5 Phoenix Audi crashed as well. In less than 30 minutes all three cars faced crashes in very rainy weather and a very wet race track. The race was later red flagged with heavy fog on the track, making it impossible to continue. Victory went to the #19 BMW Z4 GT3 from BMW Team Schubert.

Audi was unlucky in the top SP9 class, but did dominate the SP4T class. A 1-2 victory for Raeder Motorsport with their Audi TT-RS. The #272 TT-RS finished as the best Audi car in an amazing 8th overall, ahead of many top GT3 cars.

The season opener wasn't easy for Audi overall. We all hope that the other nine rounds will be better for the Audi R8 LMS. Team Phoenix Racing and Raeder Motorsport will do the full season in VLN. Mamerow Racing and the Audi race experience will join for a part time effort and selected events.
