Triumph Street Triple R and RS Receiving Updates for 2020

A couple of weeks ago, Triumph announced it would debut a new limited edition Daytona 765 at next weekend’s Silverstone MotoGP round. A newly-published executive order from the California Air Resources Bard reveals an updated Street Triple is on its way for 2020 as well, possibly using the same three-cylinder engine as the Daytona with updates derived from Triumph’s Moto2 race engines.

An updated 2020 Triumph Street Triple isn’t a complete surprise, as new Euro 5 standards mean many models from all manufacturers are receiving some updates to meet the new emissions requirements. Spy photos of a prototype have already emerged, published earlier this month on RideApart. The photos reveal some styling changes, most notably featuring new radiator shrouds and sharper headlights. The chassis and the engine (at least from the outside) look largely similar to the 2019 model.

The CARB document confirms a new engine code “DES” for the 2020 model. The current 765cc engine, introduced in 2017, was designated by the code TEN, and its 675cc predecessor (which powered the previous iteration of the Daytona) used the engine code HAR. While we still don’t know what has changed with the engine, the executive order confirms the exhaust system is getting a second three-way catalyst, helping reduce the Street Triple’s hydrocarbon emissions to 0.1 g/km (from 0.2 g/km for the 2019 model).

According to Triumph, the new Daytona produces more power and torque than any existing production 765cc motorcycle, so we’re eager to learn if the new Street Triple will share a similar state of tune.

The CARB document only certifies the Street Triple R and the Street Triple RS, but makes no mention of the S version currently offered on the 2019 model. While that can still change, for the moment it looks like only two versions of the Street Triple will be produced for 2020.

Triumph has promised two versions of the limited edition Daytona 765 at Silverstone, one homologated for North America and the second for Europe and Asia. We don’t expect any official news about an updated Street Triple until after the Daytona 765’s Aug. 23 reveal.
