This sub-Reddit thread confirms that the Internet loves the hole punch and hates the notch. For the first time in a long time, I’m excited about wallpapers. The creativity the Infinity-O display has inspired is truly a playful interaction with our hardware. But why do we love the punch hole, yet hate the notch?
If you ask anyone to draw an iPhone they’ll draw a rectangle with round corners and a notch at the top. Apple turned a design quirk into the iPhone X’s defining feature, but we never really embraced it. Sure it made the handset easy to recognize and the multitude of Android handsets that followed were all called copy cats (even though technically Essential was first).
As iconic as the notch has become even Apple tried to hide it if you look at their default wallpapers the notch sort of blends into the background.
Like many things, including pricing strategy, Samsung followed Apple and also included a variety of wallpapers designed to hide the Infinity-O display. A design that looked to cover up perhaps the now most beloved feature of the Galaxy S10 series.
The hole punch is without a doubt a branding exercise which in which Samsung beat Apple too (even though they tried to hide it with wallpapers with darker corners). Now, when you see the hole punch from a distance, you know you’re looking at a Samsung. The dual lens on the Galaxy S10 Plus is also the reason why so many people I know love the Galaxy S10 Plus over the S10, the animation around the dual lens is a great design feature.
The notch is technically better.
I think we accepted the notch because of what it did for the rest of our user experience. The notch added more screen surface ratio and a more true edge to edge design came with the in display fingerprint reader. We accepted the notch because it added value.
The punch hole is different, it’s actually less useful, it doesn’t have the same number of sensors packed into the area, it’s just a space for the camera lens. Facial recognition does not work as well, we’re actually sacrificing quality with this design choice.
There isn’t enough room inside the cutout for all the sensors you need for 3D face scanning. The face unlock on the new Samsung phones doesn’t have Iris scanning support, and it only relies on 2D scans to unlock the screen. That means you won’t be able to use it to open secure apps or to authenticate mobile payments. It also means it’s easier to hack as we’ve been seeing. We’re sure Samsung will correct this, but there is no way around the technology is inferior.
It’s a matter of choice, instead of having a secure Face ID they’ve got an in-screen ultrasonic sensor that offers fast and secure authentication and support for payments. No ugly notch. Cute hole punch, but you have to swipe your finger across the display rather than look at your phone. But, to be honest, I look at my screen more then I do secure payments using my face.
So, why do we love the hole punch more?
Wallpapers like these inspire our creative side and spark our imagination.
I did a search on creative wallpapers for the notch, I didn’t come up with many cool ones. If you have some please leave us a comment, I’m so curious what they could be! The best one I found was using the notch as Bert’s mono-brow and I think it’s safe to say this wallpaper though cool, doesn’t exactly have wide audience appeal.
The creative potential is what is causing us to love the hole punch, scrolling through the thriving sub-Reddit I constantly think “It’s that clever” or “Omg, I have to have that”. We haven’t thought of for our wallpaper as a captivating element of our Smartphone in quite some time. Wallpapers to show off high-resolution display’s lost their wow factor years ago. Now, most of us set it and forget it.
Incorporating the hole punch into the wallpaper of your phone is engaging. The notch was an unwelcome invasion of our screen real estate, the hole punch is engaging and dynamic. A playful design element to be enjoyed not blended into the background.
For the first time in a long time, I’m missing the ability to put the lock and home screen photos on rotation (OPPO has been doing this for years). Samsung should let you create a folder and allow you to change your wallpaper and lock screen daily or weekly! I have too many dope wallpapers thanks to that Reddit Sub-thread!
