HTC Exodus 1 blockchain phone now available to preorder

We knew HTC was planning on launching its first blockchain smartphone, the Exodus 1, before the end of the year. And sure enough, the handset is now available to preorder.

HTC made the preorder official on Tuesday, but you can only order the handset via cryptocurrency: either Bitcoin or Ethereum. If you do preorder, the handset boasts a 6-inch Quad HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage. It is IP68-rated for water- and dust-resistance and is running Android Oreo out of the box.

The new smartphone has plenty of HTC tweaks, too, including Edge Sense 2 technology so you can squeeze the phone to handle some operations, like calling up Google Assistant. It also has HTC’s BoomSound Hi-Fi edition for improved audio quality, along with HTC’s USonic with Active Noise Cancellation for when you’re listening with wired headphones. The battery measures in at 3500mAh.

Around back, there is a 12MP camera paired with a 16MP shooter. And around front there are a pair of 8MP cameras.

So what helps the Exodus stand out? There’s a social key recovery system to start. This is a method to help you recover important information in the event your Exodus 1 is lost or stolen, or if you lose your key information. This will let you give your key information to some trusted friends or family members, and then they will have to download a specific key management app. HTC, by way of a secret sharing algorithm, will share your key information with them through that app, securely. If needed, they can use the app to retrieve your key information.

Part of the phone has also been partitioned to help boost security.

The price for the new high-end blockchain smartphone is round $970. If you pay with Bitcoin, it’ll cost BTC 0.15, while you will need to fork over ETH 4.78 if you choose the other cryptocurrency option.

HTC says the device will ship sometime in December, with no specific date provided.
