YouTube Intros New Ways For Creators To Make Money

YouTube has introduced new tools designed to help creators generate income from their content while also continuing to grow their communities and deepen engagement with fans. The video-sharing service says the new solutions have been inspired by Super Chat, a type of paid comment option rolled out by YouTube in January last year to allow fans who watch live streams get a creator’s attention and hear their comments by paying for a Super Chat which will stay pinned for up to five hours.

Banking on the success of Super Chat, YouTube has added a new feature channel Channel Memberships where creators will be able to charge their subscribers a monthly fee of $4.99. In exchange, fans will be able to gain access to exclusive content in the Community tab and custom perks like extra videos, subscribers-only live streams, and shout-outs. Additionally, paying members will be able to receive exclusive badges and new emoji. YouTube noted that this business model is already present in the video-sharing platform in the form of sponsorship. Gamers and gaming fans, in particular, have been able to experience sponsorship introduced by YouTube in September last year to let subscribers of a certain channel on YouTube Gaming set up a monthly recurring payment that will automatically deduct from their account each month. YouTube is planning to apply this business model to channels with over 100,000 subscribers on YouTube as part of the Channel Memberships feature soon, with further plans to introduce the feature to a wider number of creators in the future. YouTube also teamed up with Teespring to launch a new tool meant to help creators sell customized merchandise items through their channel. At the moment, only those channels in the United States with more than 10,000 subscribers can use the new feature, with YouTube pledging to roll it out to more creators in the future in collaboration with other merchandising partners.

Finally, YouTube announced Premieres, a new tool designed to let creators record videos and upload them as a live moment to the video-sharing platform. YouTube says that the service will automatically roll out a landing page to the public in order to amp up the interest of fans once a creator releases a Premiere video. The new feature also provides a new way for creators to earn money by using Channel Memberships perks and Super Chat for their traditional video uploads.
