Nokia Mobile has taken to its official Twitter page in response to a tweeted question, confirming that at least four of its devices will be getting a face unlocking feature over the “coming months.” The company didn’t provide any specifics about a time frame for any of the releases but did say that the feature will be included in an over-the-air (OTA) update. That likely means it will arrive alongside other features that have yet to be announced but it could always show up in a standalone update. In the meantime, the devices said to be gaining the new feature include the HMD-built Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus, new Nokia 6, and Nokia 8.
Each of the listed devices is a relatively recent handset but not really new. However, the company hasn’t historically been averse to updating older devices with the newest features, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that these mobiles will be receiving the new feature. In fact, the ability to unlock the screen with just a user’s face turned up on the company’s Nokia 7 alongside Android Oreo 8.1 back in May. That update also brought the handset’s Android Security Patch level up to May 2018. The facial unlock functionality should work similarly to how it works on that other device and it wouldn’t be too surprising to see it arrive with a security patch.
Interestingly enough, at least one user responded to the tweet to claim that the feature is already available on the “Nokia 6.1,” which the Nokia post appears to apply to. That response was posted today, so it’s entirely possible that the 2018 version of the Nokia 6 has already begun receiving the update. The news should be taken with a grain of salt but, if that does turn out to be the case, then it could take up to several weeks for the update to completely roll out. So, in any case, nobody should be too concerned if it hasn’t hit their handset just yet. The second user, posting under the handle “@eddman2,” didn’t provide any further details about what, if any, other software or firmware updates were included along with the new feature.
