Google has started rolling out a new Google Duo update, we’re looking at version 36 here. This update does not exactly bring any new features to the tablet, but it does mark the end of support for devices that run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Just to be clear, this does not mean that Google Duo will no longer work on devices that run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, it only means that devices running that Android version will no longer get Google Duo updates.
This version of Google Duo also indicates that tablet support is on the way as well. This new update points out that you can log into ‘other devices’ with the same account, and that users can make and receive calls on tablets. For those of you who do not know, tablet support means that you will probably be able to install Google Duo on tablets soon, from the Play Store, as the app is technically not yet available for tablets, at least not officially. Sideloading an app on tablets seems to work just fine, though, in case you were wondering, and sideloading an app isn’t exactly a problem, but it’s nowhere near as convenient as installing it directly from the Play Store. Based on the indication this version of Google Duo is giving away, official support for tablets may become available really soon, maybe even in the next build of Google Duo.
Google Duo has been around since August 2016, when Google introduced this app along with Google Allo. Google Duo is basically a video chatting mobile application which was supposed to replace Hangouts, at least for regular use, as Hangouts was never supposed to go away, but Google was aiming to move it to the enterprise sector. Google Duo currently holds a 4.6-star rating in the Play Store, and has over 500 million installs worldwide, but it still has a long way to go if it’s aiming to replace Hangouts, and compete with other video chatting platforms out there, at least as far as sheer usage numbers are concerned.
