LG Watch Libre Possibly In The Works With LTE Capabilities

LG Electronics may currently be working on another smartwatch lineup besides the Watch Timepiece one that’s expected to be announced in the near future, with the company recently filing to trademark the term “LG Watch Libre.” The firm submitted its application to the South Korean intellectual property agency earlier this month and the documentation was then discovered by Dutch tech blog LetsGoDigital. Besides the name of the trademark, its short description that specifically mentions wearables and wrist-worn computers is another indicator that the Watch Libre is meant to be an intelligent timepiece, most likely one running Google’s Wear OS, formerly known as Android Wear.

The Seoul-based original equipment manufacturer recently certified two unknown devices with the United States Federal Communications Commission whose public database now mentions model numbers LG-W315 and LM-W319, with the former having 4G LTE capabilities, whereas the latter is said to be a Wi-Fi-only offering. The chances of either of those products being planned to bear the LG Watch Libre moniker appear slim as the OEM traditionally secures trademarks long before it has working prototypes of its upcoming devices ready for testing and certification. The LG Watch Timepiece series is widely expected to be officially announced this summer, though the South Korean tech giant has yet to follow up on its Watch Sport and Watch Style wearables from last year.

At least one of the company’s upcoming smartwatches is likely to be powered by a new silicon module from Qualcomm that the San Diego, California-based chipmaker already confirmed is in the works and will be commercialized by this year’s holiday season. Smartwatches are presently the main product category driving the growth of the wearable industry on a global scale as fitness trackers started losing momentum in recent times and are now largely stagnating, according to numerous market researchers. LG may debut its new intelligent timepieces at Berlin-based IFA in late August, provided it doesn’t resolve to introduce them at an earlier date.
