Qualcomm is building better chips for Wear OS

Right now, there is an aging chip inside Wear OS smartwatches: the Qualcomm-branded Snapdragon Wear 2100. It hasn’t done the smartwatch platform any favors recently, but it looks like Qualcomm is ready to finally upgrade.

Pankaj Kedia, Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Wearables, recently spoke with Wareable and said that his company is working on a new flagship chipset for smartwatches that will debut with a brand new wearable in the fall. Kedia also stated that “several partners” will be launching products by the holiday season of this year.

As for the new processors, Kedia says they will be “designed from the ground up for a no-compromises smartwatch experience”. Kedia expects the new processors will allow for manufacturers to build smaller smartwatches and offer up even better battery life.

Another key area of focus for Qualcomm is supporting wearables that have always-on displays, stating that a smartwatch has to be primarily a watch, so being able to quickly get information from its display is crucial.

Specific details were left out, unsurprisingly. But Kedia does believe that these new chips will “significantly change” the Wear OS platform as a whole. So when we do see this new hardware announced, we will also hopefully see some exciting new smartwatches as well.

Are you ready to buy a new Wear OS device?
