Indians have largely approved of Google Assistant, which is evident from the fact that the virtual assistant has already received close to half a million marriage proposals. The 450,000 proposals were made when the Assistant’s availability was limited to Android phones and wearables in the country. This number was confirmed by Rishi Chandra, VP of product management and general manager of Home products at Google, at Home devices’ launch in the country earlier this week. Google’s voice assistant has been available in the market for quite some time now on Android smartphones and smart watches with support for English (India), which has since made it attuned to varied Indian dialects and accents, while the Hindi language was recently added to the list. Though, Google Assistant’s capabilities in Hindi are currently limited when compared to an extensive list that Indian English is enabled for.
Google Home and Home Mini devices were introduced in the country last Tuesday at an event in New Delhi. Initially, the Assistant on Home devices will only interact in English (India) and Google will roll out the support for Hindi later in the year. For developing a local ecosystem of services, the company has partnered with a handful of music streaming services and news outlets in India. While home control is limited to a few internationally available brands, with local brands expected to come on board in the following weeks. Google Home devices will reportedly become multilingual in the coming months, which should benefit countries like India where two or more languages are generally used in a household.
The company decided not to announce the larger, and also pricier, Home Max in the country, with only Home and Home Mini introduced. These smart speakers currently don’t have features like Routines and Shortcuts enabled in India and Google is said to be working on to bring them in the near future. While certain features including Voice Match, for connecting multiple user accounts to a single Home device, and Broadcast were made available right out of the box. The smaller Home Mini is priced at Rs. 4,499 ($69) and the Home costs Rs. 9,999 ($153) in India, which is the same as Amazon Echo Dot and Echo, respectively.
