The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus have topped the smartphone ranking list of the publication Consumer Reports. It is important to note that the publication has previously ranked the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S7 as the top smartphones of the year in 2017 and 2016 respectively. The publication also noted a number of key strengths of the device. First is the smartphone’s improved durability. The publication tested devices’ durability by dropping the smartphone a hundred times in a tumbler. Even though both the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S8 are made out of glass, the Galaxy S9 only suffered minor damage after the test while the displays of both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus were already non-functional after just 50 drops. However, unlike its smaller counterpart, the Galaxy S9 Plus cracked after 100 drops, although it still survived the first 50 drops.
Consumer Reports also highlighted the improved performance of the Samsung Galaxy S9, which resulted in the faster opening of applications, and quicker loading of websites. The improved performance is attributed to the Snapdragon 845 chipset that powers the smartphone. Another positive feature of the device that the publication highlighted is the handset’s stereo speakers, which is capable of delivering full sound quality at a good volume. Last but not the least, the publication also noted the improved placement of the handset’s fingerprint scanner. The new location of the fingerprint sensor reduces the risk of accidentally smudging the device’s camera.
It was also emphasized that the key shortcomings of the two new flagship devices from the South Korean tech giant resulted in a reduction of overall scores for the two handsets. Among these shortcomings is the oversharpening of photos captured by the cameras, which results in an unnatural halo and exaggerated contrast. In addition, the publication mentioned the considerably poorer battery life of the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus compared to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, although it also noted that the battery of the newer smartphones can still last a whole day with regular use. For consumers who are looking for alternatives from other manufacturers, Consumer Reports has recently listed down the top 5 best smartphones that are not manufactured by either Samsung or Apple. Included in the list are the Huawei Mate 10, the Mate 10 Pro, the LG V30, the LG G6, and the HTC U11.
