The co-founder of the defunct video service Vine, Dom Hofmann, has provided details regarding the features and policies of the successor to Vine, V2. These details come after the creator teased the video service in December last year. Like Vine, V2 will be a platform for users to share short video clips. The videos that will be shared on the platform will last from two seconds to 6.5 seconds and it will also loop repeatedly. Users of V2 are now allowed to upload video clips from the camera roll of their mobile devices. This functionality permits people to upload clips that have already been edited in dedicated video editing applications. In addition, it seems that V2 will utilize the entire screen of the smartphone, rather than limiting the shape of the video clips to square. Users also gain the ability to switch between the selfie shooter and the rear camera of the mobile device while recording a video, although unlike Snapchat, the platform does not include any in-app filters. The users of the platform will have the ability to choose the gender pronouns of their preference, and these gender pronouns will serve as a “top-level profile feature”. Moreover, to prevent other users from reposting videos, people will have the option to apply watermarks to their videos.
In order to retain content creators, the founder of V2 stated that platform will have a stricter moderation policy. More specifically, Hofmann mentioned that the platform’s moderators will not tolerate any act of name-calling and harassment towards other users. Content creators will also have the option to disable comments in specific videos. Another feature of V2 that caters to content creators is the “Team” functionality. The Team feature allows multiple users to post and manage a special type of account. This account will have a profile page that lists all the users that manage the account, and it will also be able to promote and repost video clips with alternate captions. Hofmann stated that this feature should help “enhance” the behavior of collaboration that is already observed in content creators that utilize other video platforms. V2 will also permit its users to share links to other social media accounts, although Hofmann points out the possibility of attackers hijacking this feature to distribute spam.
It is important to note the service is referred to as V2 in order to prevent copyright infringement lawsuits. Twitter, which acquired Vine before the video service was launched in 2013, still holds the trademark for “Vine”. The social networking service shut down the platform in late 2016. Hofmann did not provide a specific date regarding the launch of V2, although there is already an official Twitter account and forums for the platform.
