Snap Inc. has introduced a new feature to its Snapchat messaging solution that allows users to share Stories available publicly on the platform with contacts outside of the app. The new feature is part of Snap Inc.’s efforts to redesign the platform in a move to provide its users with a better experience. The goal is to draw more users to the platform amid growing competition with Facebook and Instagram by giving more focus on the content. The new sharing capability is coming first to Snapchat in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia beginning today, while its availability in other markets is scheduled over the next few weeks both on the Android and iOS platforms.
With the new change coming to Snapchat, users will be able to send Official Stories, Our Stories, and Search Stories to friends and family, for example, via email or text by pressing and holding on the Story tile in the Discover section so that the mini-profile shows up. This step also brings up the share option along with the “subscribe” button. On top of sharing a Story via email or text, there are other sharing options available as well, including sharing to the other apps where sharing is enabled or copying the link. Your friends and family or anyone who will receive the link will then have access to these public Stories by viewing them through Snapchat’s new Story player. Keep in mind, however, that Snapchat still upholds its ephemerality, for which it has been popularly known. That means Our Stories and Search Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for one month while Official Stories will disappear from non-Snapchat platforms after 24 hours.
Snap Inc.’s move to revamp Snapchat is understood to be in response to the company’s disappointing financial results during the third quarter of last year. It was also reported back in September that many of Snapchat‘s popular users or influencers began fleeing to Instagram because of the platform’s potential to generate more money for them. Some of the recent changes Snapchat gained include the ability to create Snapchat AR Lenses using its Lens Studio tool. The image messaging and multimedia platform is expected to gain more features over the coming months as Snap Inc. seeks to bring more users to the platform.
