Project Fi Will Now Cap Data Use Cost At $60

Project Fi will now cap data use cost at $60, which means your monthly total bill as a subscriber of Google’s wireless service plan can never go above $80. Essentially this is Google’s way of delivering an actual unlimited plan to users that won’t cost them an arm and a leg to have the benefits of an all-you-can-eat style of data consumption. It’s set at competitive pricing along with other wireless service providers and it’s available right now for existing Project Fi customers, and anyone who chooses to sign up for the service following Google’s rollout of the plan changes today, which is definitely a good thing if you’ve been considering giving Project Fi a try but have held off due to the potential that data could be expensive if you use quite a bit more than 6GB of data every single month.

If there’s one caveat Project Fi users want to pay attention to it’s that the data speeds will slow down if you end up using more than 15GB of data in a single cycle, but as Google points out only around one percent of the Project Fi subscriber base actually goes through this extremely high amount of monthly data usage, so most consumers who have Fi will probably never have to experience the slowed speeds of the network.

For those not already familiar with Project Fi these changes don’t mean the “never pay for what you don’t use” mantra is going away as Google will still only charge you the $20 initial plan cost and the $10 for every GB of data that you consume, and the bill protection extends to any of the countries where Project Fi works, too, so if you’re traveling abroad you can still use your plan like normal and any amount of data used over 6GB will still fall under this new $80 monthly cost. Things are a tad bit different for families. For example, a family plan of two on Project Fi will have data use cost capped after going through 10GB of data, while a family of three will have that cap raised to 12GB, or 14GB for a family plan of four. Google doesn’t make it completely clear if the 10GB, 12GB, or 14GB applies to each person on the plan, and for a family of five where the cap is at 16GB, the slowed speeds come into play at 15GB of use, so that’s something to pay attention to as well as the last GB of data use before that plan’s cap will be slowed. This is a huge improvement to the Project Fi service, although it is more beneficial for those who are single users.
