Google Announces Plans To Finally Use Its Playa Vista Hangar

Google has finally announced plans to start moving some of its operations to the 319,000-square foot hangar in Playa Vista, a location it first leased way back in 2016. That’s according to a new announcement made via the official Google website for the property. Unfortunately, the search giant has still not outlined exactly what it will do with the property or provided a specific date on which employees will begin to arrive. Extensive office space – comprised of a three-story-tall steel structure, new skylights, and new windows – has reportedly been built-out inside hangar since last year.

With that said, it may still be possible to hazard a guess about plans for the space based on the company’s history of similar purchases in other regions of the U.S. In fact, although purely speculative, there are some parallels between this new lease and those others – and that’s especially true when using the company’s Mountain View campus as a jumping off point. As with that other Google property, the company has not just purchased a lease on the primary property – the hangar itself, in this case. That portion of its associated properties previously held offices for other tech companies such as Facebook. Oddly enough, the company also bought the vacant lot next door to the hangar several years prior to the first reports on its intent to lease the hangar. There haven’t been any subsequent reports about the use of that other property, either. Although it bears repeating that Google could go a completely different direction with its Playa Vista properties, the circumstances themselves seem comparatively similar how Google’s acquisitions in that other city transpired.

Of course, without an official announcement from Google on the matter, there’s really no way to know for sure if the parallels will end there. As of this writing, the only official statement has been that Google will transform the hangar into “Google office space yet!” In the meantime, that shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish, given that the structure in question is historically significant on its own. For those who may not recall, the hangar was built in 1943 in order to house the largest wooden sea-plan ever built – namely, Howard Hughes’ H-4 Hercules.
