Diagram Suggests Samsung Galaxy S9 Has Thicker Side Bezels

A new schematic depicting what’s said to be the Galaxy S9 Plus compared to the Galaxy S8 Plus appeared online earlier this month, suggesting Samsung’s upcoming Android flagship will have somewhat thicker side bezels than its predecessor did. The finding is in line with the supposedly official render of the Galaxy S9 lineup that leaked several days back, indicating that Samsung opted for a less pronounced Edge Display compared to its 2017 pair of high-end smartphones. The diagram seen above was created by known industry insider Steve Hemmerstoffer, better known by his Twitter handle @OnLeaks, with the source claiming the sketches are based on the information provided by people familiar with the final design of the Galaxy S9 series. While Samsung could theoretically make some changes to the current aesthetic, that scenario doesn’t seem likely, with the new flagships now being prepared to enter mass production ahead of their late February launch and mid-March release.

The schematic shared by Mr. Hemmerstoffer indicates the Infinity Display panel of the Galaxy S9 Plus will start curving around its side edges sooner than it did on the Galaxy S8 Plus but also won’t cover as much of its side bezels. The South Korean tech giant presumably opted for that change of direction in order to make the handset easier to grip while still retaining its Edge Sense functionality. The smaller Galaxy S9 is expected to feature an identical aesthetic. Both Android flagships are expected to have slightly slimmer bottom bezels than their predecessors did, whereas their top bezels should remain the same, according to multiple leaks and reports, including the newly unveiled diagram.

The Galaxy S9 lineup will hence feature an aesthetic that’s largely in line with what Samsung already debuted last year, boasting a full-screen design with an elongated 18.5:9 display. Both devices should boast improvements in terms of processing power, being set to sport Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 and Samsung’s Exynos 9810 chip, depending on the region, in addition to having improved main cameras with a variable aperture. Other annual improvements are expected to be exclusive to the larger Galaxy S9 Plus whose base model is rumored to have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space, as well as a dual-camera setup on its back. The Android 8.0 Oreo-powered flagships are scheduled to be unveiled on February 25th in the run-up to Barcelona-based MWC 2018.
