Counterpoint & Canalys: Xiaomi Surpasses Samsung In India

Xiaomi has managed to surpass Samsung, and become India’s top smartphone manufacturer. Both Canalys and Counterpoint Research have released their findings for the fourth quarter of last year, and they both agree that Xiaomi is now the number one smartphone manufacturer in India. Xiaomi has been catching up with Samsung throughout 2017 (the two companies actually stood side-by-side in Q3 last year), as the company experienced really fast growth in India, and it seems like they managed to surpass the South Korea-based tech giant at the end of the year.

According to Canalys, Xiaomi had managed to ship over 8.2 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of last year, while the company shipped 7.3 million smartphones. Samsung actually experienced an annual growth of 17 percent in India, but that was not enough to retain that first place it seems. Canalys also notes that the Indian smartphone market grew 6 percent in 2017 (YoY), and aside from Xiaomi and Samsung, Vivo, OPPO, and Lenovo are the also included in on the list of top 5 smartphone manufacturers in India. It is worth noting, however, that Xiaomi and Samsung own more than 50 percent of the Indian smartphone market, Xiaomi is at 27 percent, while Samsung currently holds 25 percent of the market. That is still Canalys’ report, but let’s see what Counterpoint Research has to say, shall we.

As per Counterpoint Research’s Q4 2017 report, Xiaomi took the lead in India, as it managed to grab 25 percent of the market, compared to 6 percent which it held in Q4 2016, so this is quite an impressive growth for the company. Samsung held 23 percent of the market at the end of Q4 2017, compared to 24 percent in Q4 2016. According to Counterpoint Research, Lenovo, Vivo, and OPPO actually share that second place, as all of those companies managed to grab 6 percent of the market. All the other companies are occupying 34 percent of the smartphone market in India. It’s also worth noting that JIO is India’s number one feature phone manufacturer with 26 percent of the market, while Samsung is second-placed with 15 percent, says Counterpoint Research. It will be interesting to see what will happen in 2018, as the changes from Q4 2016 to Q4 2017 are staggering, at least in Xiaomi’s case.
