Spotify Has A New Three-Tab UI In The Works For Android

Spotify has a new three-tab UI in the works for its Android app and it seems that the music streaming company is looking to make things simpler for users by giving them a UI which is easier to navigate. Since this seems to currently be in testing it’s unclear how long it will be before Spotify rolls it out to all users and it’s just as unclear if Spotify plans to make this a global rollout to all users where the app is available or if it will end up pushing this out in stages to smaller numbers of users.

Currently the Spotify Android app has five different tabs in the bottom navigation bar, which includes the Home, Your Library, Search, Radio, and Browse tabs, and in the new interface that you can see from the screenshots below will take away the Radio and Browse tabs and leave just Home, Search, and Your Library which has been renamed to Your Playlists. Of course it’s not just the tab interface down at the bottom that is getting tweaked. The visual appearance and design of those tabs is also changing. By far the Search tab is the one that looks the most different. The gray search bar that is currently at the top of the page is changing to a larger white colored bar and is going to be placed lower than it is right now while also enlarging a little. Spotify is also incorporating the browse functionality into this tab to consolidate it. Below the search bar will be the Genre and Mood sections for you to look through when trying to find something to stream and these will be displayed as large colored thumbnails.

The Playlists tab is getting bigger, easier to use buttons too. Instead of a small music note icon with a “+” symbol on it for creating a new playlist, the new visual appearance has a big green button almost in the center of the page, so it’ll be hard to miss, and that’s probably the point. Other visual changes for the app include your list of likes, which can be accessed by hitting the small green heart that sits in the bottom left corner of the Playlists tab, and the main Home tab seems to have stayed mostly the same but it does appear to be using larger thumbnails for the album artwork. Though Spotify hasn’t mentioned anything publicly about these changes to the Android app yet perhaps the update which introduces them will be coming up soon.
