Another Samsung patent revolving around an unconventional smartphone design was recently published by the USPTO, revealing a concept that employs a double-sided display wrapping around one of the handset’s edges. The sketches are rather crude in the sense that they don’t reveal much else about the design, and instead, they focus solely on this particular display characteristic. In other words, this is one of the several ways Samsung has considered putting its flexible display technology in practice over the past couple of years, but as usual in such cases, a patent application doesn’t guarantee a product’s existence and as such, the unusual smartphone at hand might never be commercialized.
Nevertheless, it’s interesting to get a glimpse at Samsung’s thought process behind the scenes, and the ways in which the company might use its flexible displays in the future. Furthermore, Samsung has a relatively long history of patent applications for foldable smartphone designs, and the double-sided concept at hand appears to break the usual mold with a different take on flexible display technology. As detailed in the sketches attached to the patent application, this particular design employs a standard ‘chocolate bar’ form factor and presents a dual-sided display that wraps around the right edge of the phone. At first glance, the concept seems to be similar to the Meizu Pro 7 launched earlier in August, though that particular device actually sports a secondary display on the back panel, separate from the main screen.
It’s also worth noting that although this Samsung patent was published by the USPTO only recently, it was originally submitted in Korea a couple of years ago in 2015, prior to being submitted in the United States a year later in 2016. Having said that, it’s no surprise that this design seems to represent the imagined evolution of the ‘Edge’ display that debuted along with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Edge in late 2014. The said device was the first Samsung smartphone to adopt the Edge display, and this paved the way for several other newer flagship models including the Galaxy S8 series. Having said that, the chance for this patented design to eventually lead to a real product is slim.
