Google Assistant SDK Gets New Languages, Settings, And More

Google has added a host of new features to the Google Assistant SDK in an effort to help developers advance their product and application development projects. For the uninitiated, the SDK is a tool designed to allow developers to incorporate Google’s voice-activated virtual personal assistant into any hardware equipped with a speaker and a mic. In a bid to provide support to more users from across the world, the Google Assistant SDK has just received a new set of supported languages including English (Australia, Canada, UK, US), French (Canada, France), German, and Japanese. That means developers can now program any SDK-based device to use any of those languages with the latest release of the Google Assistant SDK.

In addition to more language support, the SDK also introduced more customization options such as altering the language, location, and the name of a phone as well as customize its search results. The new Google Assistant SDK also added the ability to program the SDK-based devices as a street address, latitude or longitude using the application programming interface (API). This can be done inside the Google Assistant app on a device. That means hardware equipped with the latest Google Assistant SDK will be able to provide query results that are based on specific locations. This is especially helpful when looking for the nearest restaurant or checking for weather updates, for example. On top of the voice-in and voice-out mechanism, the Google Assistant SDK also now includes support for text-based questions and answers in response to developers’ need for more ways to interact with Google Assistant.

Finally, the Google Assistant SDK now comes with a new Device Action feature, which allows developers to create “Actions” meant to control their SDK-based devices. With this new functionality, developers will be able to designate specific traits to be supported by the SDK-based device. This feature works to create what Google calls “structured intents” out of particular queries for temperature setting, for example. Structured intents can be made in cloud platforms through the automated speech recognition and natural language understanding technologies, with the aid of the client-side code for completing the Device Action. A new management API tool also comes with the Google Assistant SDK to help developers find their way around Device Actions so that they can register or remove a device as well as view all registered devices.
