Renders of a case that’s said to be designed for the Galaxy S9 emerged online earlier today, giving more credence to recent reports that Samsung will be repositioning the fingerprint reader of its upcoming flagship and place it beneath its camera setup instead of next to it like it did with the Galaxy S8 series. The images that can be seen in the gallery below don’t specify whether the case is meant to accommodate the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus, with the former seemingly being more likely as the accessory’s camera cutout appears to not be large enough to host two lenses that are understood to be featured on the larger device.
The renders also indicate the Galaxy S9 will feature a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a dedicated Bixby key sitting alongside its left edge when looked from the front, immediately beneath a volume down button. All of these features were already expected to make a return for Samsung‘s new Android flagship, as was yet another relocation of a heart rate monitor and a dual-LED flash that now appear to be sitting to the right of the main camera setup instead of the left. This particular design change suggests the Galaxy S9 will have a rear panel that’s more similar to that of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge instead of the Galaxy S8 lineup, save for featuring a fingerprint reader.
The South Korean original equipment manufacturer reportedly concluded its trial production run of the Galaxy S9 in October and is said to already have the capacity to release the handset come January, though it isn’t planning to do so. Instead, sources recently claimed the upcoming high-end smartphone will be introduced at the next iteration of Mobile World Congress by launching in Barcelona, Spain, on February 27th before being released in March. The Galaxy S9 lineup is said to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 and Samsung’s Exynos 9810 SoC, depending on the region, in addition to running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, thus having support for Google’s Project Treble and being more likely to receive timely software updates.
