Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Starts Getting October Security Patch

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has started receiving the monthly Android security patch for October in China and Hong Kong, and it shouldn’t be long before the update hits other markets as well. Monthly Android security updates aim to keep devices secure and up to date, protected against the very latest security threats. While Google releases these patches at the beginning of each month, however, it’s up to device makers and carriers to distribute the updates and in some cases it takes a bit longer. Samsung typically doesn’t take too long to push updates to its flagship devices and after the Galaxy S8 series, the Galaxy Note 8 is now ready for the software as well, albeit it’s not a global release just yet.

The October security patch is rolling out to Galaxy Note 8 units with model numbers SM-N9508 and SM-N9500 and, according to Samsung’s release notes, the update also brings a number of other improvements. The Galaxy Note 8 with model number SM-N9500 gets build number N9500ZCU1AQJ1, while the SM-N9508 model gets build number N9508ZMU1AQJ1. The update brings improved performance, better face recognition, improved fingerprint recognition stability in Dual messenger, enhanced stability for automatic brightness, and improved device security. The update further resolves an Air Command issue and brings other bug fixes that should enhance the overall experience. Meanwhile, the Android security patch for October 2017 fixes 215 vulnerabilities that could affect devices running on Android, six of which pertain to Samsung’s software. The update is minor, designed to improve the device’s security and stability, so no new functionality or features are in the mix.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is one of the most powerful devices currently available on the market, announced back in August as the company’s latest flagship phablet and the direct successor to last year’s ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. The device borrows some design cues from the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, but sports a dual rear camera, sharper corners, and the signature S Pen stylus that’s iconic for the Galaxy Note series. In terms of specs, the Galaxy Note 8 has a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display with a QHD+ resolution of 2,970 x 1,440 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or an Exynos 8895 processor (depending on region), 6GB of RAM, and 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB storage options, all expandable with a microSD card. The device ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board and Samsung’s custom UI on top. No information is currently available as to when the October security patch will be available globally for the Galaxy Note 8, but it could start rolling out within the next few days. When it’s ready, the update should arrive as an over-the-air (OTA) package.
