It was just a few short weeks ago that we saw Google unveil its latest products at the Made By Google event, and while Google unveiled many products at the show, the biggest interest continues to be around its own Pixel line of phones. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are the latest from the company’s budding hardware division, and while it’s clear the influence of the recent HTC business deal with Google has yet to take hold, the design language of Google’s products are coming together quite nicely. This year we’re seeing two different models, just like last year, but this time around these two sizes don’t share much in the way of design language between the two.
The smaller Pixel 2 features a 5-inch 1080p Samsung AMOLED display with 16:9 aspect ratio, and sports the same large bezels we saw on last year’s Google Pixel. The Pixel 2 XL, on the other hand, features a completely different screen size and glass design. An LG-made 6-inch Quad-HD+ P-OLED with 18:9 aspect ratio sits on the front of the Pixel 2 XL, and the glass is curved all the way around the edges of the phone, fitting far more in line with premium flagship phone design in 2017. Google has brought back front-facing stereo speakers this time around too, filling in a big negative spot that last year’s Pixel phones had.
This year Google is upgrading the camera to a dual-pixel sensor, with a brighter f/1.8 lens and the ability to detect depth without needing a second lens. Couple this with a brand new in-house designed Image Processing Unit called the Pixel Visual Core, and Google is bringing mobile photography to new levels. We’re also seeing some new AR tech that Google showed off at its Made By Google event a few weeks ago, and plenty of other promises that Google should be bringing to market in just a few short weeks with the Android 8.1 Oreo update. There’s also the usual Pixel features like live support via phone or via the support section on the phone, as well as unlimited photo and video backup at full resolution for no additional charge. Are either of these phones worth the cash this year? Find out in our video below!
